It seems like Shreyas Iyer as India’s T20I captain is only a matter of time, as multiple new reports claim that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel is looking ahead to current skipper Suryakumar Yadav, even though he has won the 2026 ICC T20I World Cup under his leadership.
It is believed that due to his poor form for a long period, the selectors considered Shreyas Iyer in place of Yadav. What will be the stand of head coach Gautam Gambhir if Agarkar and company appoint Iyer as the captain of the T20 team?

There are some assumptions about the relationship between Shreyas Iyer and Gautam Gambhir. However most of the speculations are unfounded, as there are no concrete reports or evidence that can go against the coach and player.
According to the report of RevSportz, if the selectors appoint Iyer as the next captain of the team, then Gautam Gambhir will happily welcome the decision. Quoting a source close to the matter, it is reported that Gautam Gambhir will not face any problem if Shreyas Iyer becomes the captain.

“Nothing could be further from the truth. Gambhir has no problem with Shreyas becoming the next captain. Obviously, that’s for the selectors to take. If they pick Shreyas, Gambhir would be completely okay with it,” the source told RevSportz.
The source further said that when Iyer was appointed vice-captain of the ODI team, Gambhir was in charge there and he had no objection to the appointment.
The source further said, “Shreyas has been made the ODI vice-captain while Gambhir remains the head coach. Any suggestion that there is not a good rapport between the two is false.”
On the morning of June 4, it was widely published and claimed that the board was all set to sack Suryakumar Yadav from the leadership role and would welcome Shreyas Iyer to take the team forward. However, as of now, no official release or any statement has been issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Since these claims were made by multiple reliable sources, it has created a stir among cricket fans on social media platforms. Former cricketer Aakash Chopra also expressed his opinion on this matter.
He also told that if the management gives the responsibility of captaincy to Shreyas Iyer then it will be an important step. Chopra also claims that Yadav is unlikely to be seen vacating the place for his successor any time soon, as he is a T20I World Cup-winning captain.
Aakash Chopra mentioned in his YouTube video, “Suryakumar Yadav will remain the captain for now because he has won the World Cup. You don’t change immediately after winning the World Cup, unless someone retires, like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja had retired and you had to do something else.”
He also made it clear that Suryakumar Yadav is not going to retire at the moment. If media reports and former cricketer’s opinion are to be believed, Iyer is going to become the next captain of T20 International format, but when? This is the question.
