Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson started the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign on the sidelines but finished as the player of the tournament, playing a key role in the team’s successful title defense on home soil.
The Men in Blue suffered a heavy 76-run defeat against South Africa, which forced the team management to rethink their strategy for the remaining Super 8 matches. And Sanju Samson was included back into the playing eleven for the must-win match against Zimbabwe.
Sanju Samson’s explosive innings led India to the ICC T20 World Cup title.
The Kerala star played a quickfire inning of 24 runs off 15 balls in that game and then he played a brilliant inning of 97* not out against the West Indies to help the team secure a place in the semi-finals. After this, Samson played two strong innings of 89 and 89 runs and helped India win its third trophy.

Days after the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, India head coach Gautam Gambhir revealed that the decision to bring back Sanju Samson was not made to counter off-spin bowling, as many believed at the time. The real idea behind the move was to add more offensive intent at the top and make the team more dangerous on the power play.
Gautam Gambhir told the real reason behind bringing back Samson
JioHotStar quoted Gautam Gambhir as saying, “I know a lot of people will talk about how we wanted to break the three left-handers at the top, but absolutely not. We just felt we wanted to be more explosive because the ideology in the last year and a half has been to go out there and be as explosive as we can.”
The head coach further said, “The reason for bringing in Sanju Samson was not to handle the off-spinner from the other end. It was about whether we could get even more firepower at the top and be more aggressive in the first six overs.”
How did Sanju Samson get a surprise call from Gautam Gambhir?
With the tournament reaching the deciding stage, the Indian team management decided to go with a more attacking option and Samson grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Interestingly, the moment when Samson was informed about his return to the playing eleven was very simple. Gambhir revealed that he told this to the right-handed batsman during an informal chat in the gym.
Gambhir further added, “We know what Sanju can do; there was never any doubt about his talent and explosiveness. If he gets going, he can win you matches in the first six overs.”
I told him this in the gym. In fact, we were both training together, and I told him you were going to play against Zimbabwe, and he said, ‘Come on.’ We have similar informal conversations. It’s not like the relationship between a head coach and a player. “It’s a relationship where most of our face-to-face interactions happen during practice sessions.”
Notably, Samson will next be seen in action in the upcoming IPL 2026, where he will make his debut for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He will now be eager to continue his excellent form in the league.
