Crowe warned that if India did not make an over, they would lose four important WTC points, until they ovulate England. This was the first test series of the WTC 2025–27 cycle, and after the missing in the final last year, the Indian camp knew that every point could make any difference.
Despite this, Indian captain Shubman Gill, Coach Gambhir, Assistant Coach Satanshu Kotak, and some others made a bold call that shocked Crowe. Someone suggested bringing both spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar to speed up the over rate.
How Gautam Gambhir’s bold Gambal won India The Oval Thriller
But there would have been a big risk, as England batsmen Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton could go to a scoring spree without a speed attack and would have won the final test at the Oval. And India was desperate to win the game and win the series, so Gambhir stepped with a bold decision.
The head coach made it clear that he should forget about the over rate, even if four WTC points have been docked. His only attention was to defeat England. He planned to send Prasad Krishna at one end and gave a difficult time to Mohammad Siraj, English batsmen from the other.
As mentioned by Dainik Jagran, Gautam Gambhir clearly stated, as the source quoted, “I am not worried about the over rate. If we lose four points, it can happen – so it will happen – it will happen that we will play to win.”

Shubman Gill withdrew Gautam Gambhir’s views and Siraj-Crisis
Even Gill supported Gambhir’s idea despite the circumstances in favor of batting at the beginning of 5 days. The heavy roller made the pitch friendly for the first half an hour, and the new ball was still 22 delivery away. But Gambhir believed that Siraj and Krishna could distribute with the old ball.
Gambling paid. Sirj first removed Jamie Smith, and immediately sent overton packing. India’s expectations increased, and then Siraj and Krishna took the final two wickets to seal the game for India.
India chose aggression when cautious, put a significant WTC points at risk, and trusted their fast bowlers to finish the work under pressure, and that fearless approach gave him a famous six -run win.
