Indian national cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has spoken openly about young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy not getting a chance to bowl in the second Test match against the West Indies national cricket team.

Gautam Gambhir justified Shubman Gill’s decision of not using Nitish Kumar Reddy, saying that it did not matter whether the all-rounder bowled or not as he had the experience of playing Test matches in home conditions.

Nitish Kumar Reddy played a good inning of 43 runs against West Indies

The Andhra and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) all-rounder was part of India’s playing eleven in both the Test matches of the home series against the West Indies national cricket team.

India registered a big 2-0 win over the visiting team, but Nitish Kumar Reddy did not make any major contribution to the win despite taking part in the matches.

In the opening match of the Test series at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Nitish Kumar Reddy bowled four overs in the West Indies’ first innings and did not bowl in the second innings. He did not get a chance to bat even in India’s only innings. The only notable thing that Nitish Kumar Reddy did in the match was a brilliant catch that he took to send back Tagenaarin Chanderpaul.

As the action moved towards the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Nitish Kumar Reddy continued to be unused. In India’s first innings, this all-rounder scored 43 runs with the bat and after that he only fielded.

India bowled 81.5 overs to bowl out West Indies for 248 runs and then followed on. The Roston Chase-led side had a better performance in the innings and scored 390 runs in 118.5 overs. However, Nitish Kumar Reddy was not given a chance to bowl in both the innings.

Look, for me, I think it is not important how many overs he bowls – Gautam Gambhir

Speaking at the post-match press conference in Delhi, Gautam Gambhir said that Reddy got a lot of experience on the field despite not bowling. He said:

“Look, for me, I think it is not important how many overs he has bowled. It is important that he is gaining experience, gaining experience even at home. Sometimes you learn a lot by playing the game of cricket. And this is a Test match. And we do not want to use a 23-year-old boy just on tough tours away from home. It would not be fair to him, that we decide to play him only in overseas tours, be it Australia, South. Africa, New Zealand, or England. I think when he has done well overseas, he deserves a chance in domestic conditions as well.”

Wherever we get a chance to put him in Indian conditions, we will continue to do so – Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir further said that it would be unfair to Reddy to use him only for overseas matches and he wanted to give him opportunities in Indian conditions as well. He said:

“And wherever we get a chance to have him in Indian conditions, we will continue to do that because it is important for us to groom a player like Nitish because you know bowling all-rounders are rarely seen. And we have talked about seam bowling all-rounders for decades. So whenever we get that opportunity, we will continue to groom him,” he said.
