Suryakumar Yadav permanently etched his name in the record books by defeating New Zealand in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Through the grande finale, the Men in Blue set several major records in the history of the tournament. India is now the first country to win the T20 World Cup title three times (2007, 2024, 2026), and the first to defend its title and the first to do so at home.
Suryakumar Yadav told the path to glory
Last year in 2025, there was a lot of doubt on Suryakumar Yadav due to his poor batting form. The experienced batsman proved that he knows how to make a timely comeback. In the journey, Yadav supported the team not only with his batting skills but also with his leadership qualities.
“I think we knew we were playing some good cricket over the two years, and it was going really well. We just wanted to carry on all the good habits we picked up going into the 2024 T20 World Cup.”
“Tell the boys the same thing, what is the feeling of winning the World Cup, how do we want to play in bilateral series, the flavor that we want to take forward and play the T20 World Cup,” Suryakumar Yadav said at the grand presentation ceremony after the match.
The captain also thanked Jay Shah and former captain Rohit Sharma
The captain thanked ICC Chairman Jay Shah and former India captain Rohit Sharma, under whose leadership India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, for making this moment special. The result the team achieved tonight is the end result of a long journey.
“It’s been a long journey. Starting after the 2024 World Cup when the BCCI at that time, Jai (Shah) bhai, the secretary at that time, Rohit (Sharma) bhai and everyone showed confidence in me, gave me the opportunity to lead this amazing team, and then to be here again at the Narendra Modi Stadium and do that has been a long, long, long cycle. I think it’s a special feeling”, admitted the Team India captain.
For most of the T20 World Cup 2026, the individual performances of several Indian stars like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakravarthy were under scrutiny. But when the ultimate moment came, he performed. Suryakumar Yadav praised all of them for turning the dream into reality.

“I think it was really internalized by everyone in the team and the boys took it really well. (Having confidence in their players) I think it’s really important to understand what they (Sanju, Abhishek and Varun) are capable of doing.”
“And I knew they had match-winners among them. I think it was the right time for Sanju to come in. Varun Chakravarthy, Abhishek Sharma, world number one players”, Yadav said after winning the silverware.
He said, “We always knew they had something special. There is no bigger platform than the final to do something. And especially, how Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel have been in the circuit for a long time, with all the support staff taking care of each other. I think it was very, very special.”
