As head coach, Gautam Gambhir has won consecutive ICC trophies with the India national cricket team. They started by winning the ICC Champions Trophy last year, and now they have won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The head coach of the Men in Blue has transformed India into a dominant white-ball team, especially in the T20 format.
As a player and coach, Gautam Gambhir has an excellent record of never losing an ICC knockout game. Gambhir is now on leave as the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to start in a few weeks and there will be no international play for two months. He has gone to Kolkata for the Triblazers event organized by RevSportz.
Gautam Gambhir thanked MS Dhoni
During the event he discussed his former captain MS Dhoni. Gambhir was asked to comment on the ‘smile’ comment which was posted by MS Dhoni on Instagram after Team India’s World Cup success. MS Dhoni congratulated the Indian team on Instagram and said that Dhoni was happy to see Gautam Gambhir smiling a little after winning the trophy.
Gautam Gambhir thanked MS Dhoni for his presence during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 8 and lauded him for encouraging him to smile.

In response, Gambhir said at the event, “Good for him that he came and watched the World Cup final. Good for him that he asked me to smile, and I wish one day he could be in my position, and I could write the same thing, and hopefully he could smile from the dugout.”

Gambhir wants MS Dhoni to someday coach the Indian national cricket team and win the World Cup, so that former players can write congratulatory posts and then Dhoni can be seen smiling sitting in the dugout. There have been rumors that Dhoni and Gambhir are not very close after Dhoni’s controversial comments on the 2011 ODI World Cup win.
However, they have been seen smiling and interacting with each other during the IPL and even off the field. Both the former cricketers share a good relationship and respect each other. Dhoni will be seen playing IPL for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Dhoni has also left the captaincy of CSK and he plays for the team only as a player.
Will MS Dhoni become India’s coach?
MS Dhoni has not played any head coach role yet; However, he was the mentor of the Indian team during the 2021 T20 World Cup. The former India captain has retired from international cricket and IPL 2026 could be his last season before he retires from all formats.
In the same program, Gambhir also talked about his next goal as head coach. He would love to coach the team during the 2028 Olympics and this will be possible only if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) extends his contract. Currently his tenure is till 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup and if India wins it then BCCI can renew his contract.
