The Indian national cricket team is undoubtedly going through a tough phase in Test cricket under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. Ever since Gautam Gambhir took over as India head coach in mid-2024, things have not been going his way, especially in Test and ODI cricket.
The Men in Blue may have won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 earlier this year, but they have suffered embarrassing ODI series defeats in Sri Lanka and Australia. While Gambhir’s record as a coach in T20 has been excellent, his figures in Test cricket are equally impressive.
Gautam Gambhir on target as India’s Test crisis deepens
After a shocking 0–3 home Test series defeat at the hands of New Zealand, India’s first series on home soil in 12 years, they lost 1–3 in Australia, losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, they managed to tie the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2–2 in England.

In 18 Tests under Gambhir’s leadership, India won seven, lost nine and drew two matches. In the ongoing two-match Test series against South Africa, the host team has lost the first match by 30 runs at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. They are currently facing South Africa in the final Test in Guwahati.
While the Indian team is on the verge of suffering another embarrassing whitewash at home in Test matches, Gambhir is facing intense heat after the team’s abject batting performance in the first innings in Guwahati. This has raised serious questions on Gambhir’s strategies and team combination.
Amid India’s Test defeat, Iceland Cricket has hit out hard at Gautam Gambhir.
Amid India’s flop show in the Tests, Iceland Cricket, known for its witty and often cheeky social media presence, took a dig at Gautam Gambhir. Taking a light-hearted dig at India’s recent Test struggles, the European affiliate side said Gambhir will not be invited to coach their national team.
Iceland Cricket’s social media handle released a cheeky update claiming that their national coaching seat has already been filled and their team has a 75% win record in 2025, mocking India’s Test fortunes under Gambhir.

He posted,
To all our fans, no, Gautam Gambhir will not be invited to become the coach of our new national team. That spot is already filled and we have won 75% of our matches in 2025.

Excavation in Iceland has exposed India’s growing test crisis.
It was just a jab from the European allies, but the message behind it was hard to ignore. When even a small supporting group feels the courage to mock the coach of a powerful team, it shows how widely India’s Test problems are being seen around the world.
India’s disappointing performance against South Africa and the latest blow to Iceland cricket has reignited the debate about the team selection, vague planning and overly aggressive batting style that keeps leading to sudden collapses both domestically and overseas.
Notably, after scoring 489 runs on the board in their first innings, the Proteas bowled out the hosts for just 201 runs, and they are now batting at 66/1 in the second and final Test in Guwahati.
The tourists have already taken a lead of 350+ runs, and they are heading towards a big win on Indian soil.
