Gautam Gambhir fired at MS Dhoni? India coach drops “people weren’t in that situation” bomb

A strong message from India head coach Gautam Gambhir went viral, and it was former captain MS Dhoni’s sharp reaction to his congratulatory post on winning the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 8, 2026.

After India lifted the T20 World Cup trophy with a massive win over New Zealand in the final, Dhoni congratulated the Men in Blue and also praised Gambhir, saying that his smile looked great on him. His special line to Gambhir was, “A smile looks great on you; intensity with a smile is a great combination.”

Given the past history between the two Indian icons, the post quickly went viral on social media platforms, so the cricket world enjoyed seeing the two former teammates reconnect after such a big moment.

Now, Gambhir has reacted to Dhoni’s words and shared how the pressure inside the Indian dressing room during the World Cup did not allow the coaches to express their feelings. The head coach explained that people outside the team often do not fully understand the difficult conditions that players and staff face in the dugout during such major tournaments.

Gautam Gambhir said on ANI podcast, “It is very difficult to be in a situation where people are not there. But good for him that he posted on it honestly, but I think when you are in the dugout, there is a lot at stake. There are always so many expectations from the Indian team that even if you want to laugh, you cannot laugh.”

Especially when you play a tournament like the World Cup. Because in India, unfortunately, losing is not an option, but it can happen. Because if losing was not an option, India would have won all the World Cups. But this does not happen. This is a game.”

Gautam Gambhir tells the bitter reality of cricket

The Indian head coach also highlighted that cricket is very different from many other professions. Teams work hard for months and sometimes even years to prepare for a major tournament. But despite all efforts and sacrifices, success is never guaranteed.

Gambhir further explained, “You invest your whole life in something, but there is no guarantee of returns. There is no equity or stock market where if you invest you will get returns. Here you work hard and invest for one and a half years.”

And there was no guarantee that we would win the World Cup. So, think about it: if we don’t win the World Cup or lose in the semi-finals, the returns are zero. After so much hard work, after so much investment. That’s why I say sports is very different from any other profession.”

India created history on home ground

India successfully defended their title on home soil by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final of T20 World Cup 2026. With this famous win, India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil.

They also created history by winning two consecutive titles and became the first country to win the T20 World Cup trophy three times. They won the first title in 2007 under the captaincy of Dhoni and then in 2024 under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.
