Gautam Gambhir clashes with Shubman Gill in Perth after joining Virat Kohli in the list of captaincy embarrassments

India national cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir was not happy when the Shubman Gill-led side suffered a defeat against Australia national cricket team in the opening match of the ODI series.

Gautam Gambhir, along with Sitanshu Kotak and Morne Morkel, was seen engaging in an animated conversation with newly appointed India national cricket team ODI captain Shubman Gill after the series defeat in the first match.

Shubman Gill has started his ODI captaincy career with a defeat.

Before the Australia tour, Gill was made India’s ODI captain in place of Rohit Sharma. Elaborating on the decision, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that they have identified Shubman Gill as the next captain for all formats and want to give him some time to build the squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.

This cruel decision of sacking Rohit Sharma despite leading India to consecutive wins in ICC tournaments did not go down well with the fans. However, the senior opener made sure to provide support to Gill and there were no differences between the two.

Leading India in his first ODI was always going to be a tough challenge for Shubman Gill, and the Punjab youngster suffered a crushing defeat on his debut in 50-over cricket.

In the match, India lost the toss and were invited to bat first. This was the 16th consecutive time India have lost the toss in ODIs, while their last win was against New Zealand in the World Cup 2023 in Mumbai.

Batting first was quite challenging for India because the pitch was quite spicy. To add to India’s troubles, there were several interruptions due to rain, resulting in no time for the batsmen to settle into the middle and restricting the Men in Blue to 136/9 in the 26-overs-per-side contest.

Due to implementation of DRS, Team India’s score reduced and Australia got the target of 131 runs. The Mitchell Marsh-led side easily crossed the finish line with 7 wickets in hand and 29 balls to spare.

Right after the match, head coach Gautam Gambhir met Gill in the middle of the field and was seen having an intense discussion with him.

Gambhir was joined by his fellow coaches Morne Morkel and Sitanshu Kotak, who were listening closely as Gill, India’s new captain as head coach, lectured.

Shubman Gill joins Virat Kohli in unwanted list

Gill is currently India’s Test and ODI captain and serves as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy in T20I cricket. Several reports have claimed that he will take over as the captain of the Indian T20I team after the T20 World Cup 2026 and will become the captain across all formats.

There are a lot of expectations from this Punjab cricketer, but his captaincy has not had a good start. He lost his first T20 match as captain against Zimbabwe in 2024 before losing his first Test in 2025 against England.

And now, Shubman Gill has lost his first ODI as captain in Perth, which puts him in the unwanted captaincy list which includes Virat Kohli. Gill and Kohli are the only two Indian captains in history to lose their first match in all three formats in men’s internationals.
