India’s national cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has sought a contract extension from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The former left-handed batsman also said that he would love to coach the India national cricket team at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in the summer of 2028.
BCCI appointed him as the head coach till the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. However, cricket will return to the Olympic Games six months after the World Cup. Notably, the next edition of the T20 World Cup will also be played in 2028, when India will be the defending champions.

Speaking to RevSportz about his future plans, Gautam Gambhir expressed his excitement about the Los Angeles Olympic Games. He said coaching at the Olympics would be a rare and great honor for any sports professional.
“I would love to be a part of the Olympics. It’s a huge honour. Very few people get the honor of representing India at the Olympics,” Gambhir said.
Cricket at the Los Angeles Olympic Games will be played in the fast-paced T20 format. Both men and women teams will represent their country in this prestigious event. After their recent win, the India national cricket team will enter the tournament as one of the favourites.
India wins T20 World Cup 2026 after stunning win over New Zealand
India national cricket team recently won the T20 World Cup 2026 by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs. Batting first in Ahmedabad, India scored 255 runs for five wickets and then bowled out New Zealand for 159 runs in 19 overs.
The Men in Blue became the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title. After winning the 2024 edition under Rohit Sharma, they also secured their third overall trophy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India gave a reward of Rs 131 crore to the winning team.
During the official press conference after the match, captain Suryakumar Yadav said that one of his goals is to win the Olympic gold medal along with the 2028 T20 World Cup.
Gautam Gambhir wins second ICC title as India head coach
The recent T20 World Cup win was the second ICC title under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. Earlier he had guided the India national cricket team to win the 2025 Champions Trophy, where India, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, defeated New Zealand in the final in Dubai.
International cricket will now come to a halt as players take part in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, which is scheduled to begin on March 28.
After the franchise tournament, Gautam Gambhir will return to international coaching duties in June when India host the Afghanistan national cricket team for a bilateral series.
The trio of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir will also return for the series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India may evaluate the results when deciding whether to extend Gambhir’s coaching contract.
