The India national cricket team has been one of the strongest teams in white ball formats, especially the T20 format. Suryakumar Yadav’s team created history by winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, becoming the first team to win the trophy in consecutive years, winning it at home, and also the first team to win the trophy three times.
Suryakumar Yadav has been impressive with his record as captain of the Men in Blue and has a better win percentage record compared to other World Cup-winning captains Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni. SKY has led the team well and won 8 out of 9 games in the recently concluded tournament. Suryakumar’s winning percentage is 80.76.
Will Suryakumar Yadav be removed from captaincy?
Head coach Gautam Gambhir is a big fan of Suryakumar’s captaincy in the shorter formats of the game. However, his poor batting record casts serious doubts over his participation in the country’s 2028 Olympic campaign in Los Angeles. In this context, India’s tour of England and Ireland in June-July will be important for the captain.
According to a PTI report, the selectors and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will focus more on his batting than his captaincy. The upcoming tour could determine their future for the next two years until the next round of major events in 2028, which includes the Olympics and the T20 World Cup. Except for the first game against the United States, SKY did not perform well with the bat in the T20 World Cup.
Notably, Gautam Gambhir sees Suryakumar as the first choice for captaincy but the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee may not be unanimous on the head coach if the Mumbai Indians star struggles with form.
