The West Indies national cricket team has announced its squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with several notable returns attracting attention ahead of the start of the new assignment in Antigua.

The series, to be played entirely at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, comes at a crucial stage of the World Test Championship cycle for the Caribbean side. After enduring a difficult campaign that has seen them drop to the bottom of the WTC standings, the men in maroon will be desperate to finish the cycle strongly ahead of the home Test against Pakistan and the tour of Bangladesh later this year.

Complete details of West Indies team for Sri Lanka Test: Return of Joshua da Silva and Aamir Jangu

The biggest talking point in the West Indies team announcement is the return of wicketkeeper-batsman Joshua da Silva and Trinidad and Tobago batsman Aamir Zangu.

Da Silva forced a comeback into the national team after a string of stellar performances in domestic cricket. The 33-Test veteran scored 996 runs in the last two editions of the West Indies Championship, making himself impossible to ignore for the selectors. His return follows Tevin Imlach being wicketless during West Indies’ most recent Test series in New Zealand.

Jangu has earned a well-deserved recall after a sensational domestic season. The left-handed batsman became one of the leading run-scorers in the West Indies Championship, scoring 411 runs in just seven innings. His campaign included a brilliant unbeaten double century (203*) for Trinidad and Tobago against the Leeward Islands. The upcoming Sri Lanka series will be his first Test team selection since January 2025.

The good news for the West Indies is that fast bowlers Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph are returning after missing the tours of India and New Zealand late last year due to injury. The pair last appeared in Test cricket during the home series against Australia in 2025 and provided a strong bowling attack.

Roston Chase will lead the team, while experienced spinner Jomel Warrican has been named vice-captain.

Every Test series is an opportunity for us to grow – Darren Sammy

West Indies head coach Darren Sammy believes the upcoming Sri Lanka series presents another important opportunity for the team to continue making its mark in the longest format.

With the return of several senior players and a long preparation camp underway in Antigua, Sammy is hopeful that the team can put in a strong performance in front of the home supporters.

“Each Test series is an opportunity for us to grow as a team and strengthen our identity. Sri Lanka are a quality team, so we know we have to be at our best, but we are excited for the challenge ahead.”

Sammy also stressed the importance of discipline and resilience as the team looks to end the WTC cycle on a positive note.

“For us, it’s about playing with discipline, showing character when the game gets tough, and representing the West Indies with pride. The players have been working hard, and we look forward to putting on a strong performance for our fans across the Caribbean.”

The West Indies team is currently participating in a high-performance training camp in Antigua running from June 12 to June 22. According to Sammy, the camp is helping the coaching staff assess the players’ preparation while fine-tuning plans for the Sri Lanka series and the subsequent home tour against Pakistan.

“This is a key component of our preparations ahead of the series, providing valuable time for players and coaches to hone and hone the skills we want to hone, based on the areas we need to focus on when facing this opponent.”

“Additionally, the four-day practice games prior to the series provide some of our test candidates the opportunity to play in high-intensity action and provide an opportunity for greater competition within the team ahead of upcoming and future series.”
