The inaugural match of the Big Bash League (BBL) is all set to be held in India; The official announcement came on the morning of July 14. Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed that the first match of BBL 16 will be held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Cricket Australia has released the full schedule for the upcoming BBL edition with the season kicking off in Chennai, India. This will be the first time in the history of the league that a match will be held outside Australia in India.
The inaugural match of BBL 16 will be held in Chennai.
16th The edition of the Big Bash League will head towards its conclusion with 44 matches including the final. Of these forty-four games, thirty matches will be held in Australia and one match will be held in Chennai, India. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Saturday, December 12.
“The season opener at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium will be followed by Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers opening night at the Gabba three days later in Australia.” Cricket Australia confirmed this through its press release on Tuesday.
The first match of the season will be played between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers in Chennai on 12 December. Since the first match of BBL 16 will be held in India, the match will start at 8.10 pm. The purpose of arranging Big Bash League matches in India is to attract more attention of cricket fans. Since cricket is widely popular in India, Cricket Australia is looking to gain additional momentum by capturing the attention of the Indian audience through the season opener.
“We are extremely excited by the opportunity to kick off the season in Chennai,” league chief Alistair Dobson said in an official statement.
Cricket Australia reveals its plans through the Big Bash League
In the official statement, Alistair Dobson mentioned that the upcoming season of the franchise league will mark innovation and growth. Additionally, the sixteenth edition of the league will be played with newly designed rules for batsmen and fielders, which may add more excitement to the game.
“The Big Bash was built on a spirit of innovation and evolution, and our new designated batsman and fielder rules will come into effect this season, giving teams more strategic options and creating new dynamics for fans to enjoy,” Dobson said in a statement.
There are some other notable things about this year’s Big Bash League that make it different from previous seasons. The 44-game season, which will run from December 12 to January 26, will see marquee matches on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Knock-out phase remains unchanged
The first match of the season in Australia will take place on 15 December when Brisbane Heat host Sydney Sixers on 15 December.
Cricket Australia has kept the four-match finals format unchanged, with the top four teams playing in the knockout stage, with the qualifiers taking place on Tuesday, January 19. The final match of the season will take place on 26 January, with a reserve day as a backup plan.
