Full schedule, dates and venues revealed

SA20 organizers have officially announced the full schedule for the fifth edition of the tournament, with the competition scheduled to run from January 17 to February 21, 2027.

The SA20 2027 will once again see six franchises compete in South Africa, with the tournament starting in Gkebarha and culminating in the final at Newlands in Cape Town. The schedule for the fifth season of the competition has been adjusted to start later than usual to accommodate England’s ODI series against South Africa.

SA20 2027 schedule announced: Season 5 to start on January 17 – know why

The opening match of SA20 2027 will see defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape take on Pretoria Capitals in a rematch of the Season 4 final at St George’s Park, Gkebarha on Sunday, January 17.

The league stage will last for a month, with each franchise playing home and away matches at six venues across South Africa. Organizers have also scheduled four Saturday double-headers on January 23, January 30, February 6 and February 13, giving supporters the chance to enjoy two matches on the same day throughout the tournament.

The playoffs begin with Qualifier 1 at Boland Park, Paarl on 16 February, marking the first time that the venue will host a playoff match in SA20 history. The Wanderers will then host both the Eliminator in Johannesburg on 17 February and Qualifier 2 on 19 February, before the focus turns to Newlands, Cape Town, where the final will be played on 21 February.

Newlands will host a championship match for the second consecutive season and third time overall since the tournament began. Meanwhile, the delayed start to Season 5 ensures there is no clash with England’s ODI series in South Africa, allowing more of the world’s leading players to participate in the competition.

SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith said the release of the fixture list was an important milestone as preparations for the new season intensified. He said that starting the tournament with a rematch of last season’s dramatic final is the perfect start to another exciting edition of the league.

“Announcing the Betway SA20 fixtures is always a big moment for us, it’s the first big milestone before the new season and means the wheels are in motion for us as we head towards an incredible month of cricket.

Smith said, “There is no better way to start Season 5 than repeating one of the most exciting finals in our history. Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals played a classic match in Cape Town last season, and it is fitting that those two teams are in the middle when the season starts in Gkebarha on 17 January 2027.”

Cape Town will once again host the SA20 final at Newlands and Mayor Geordine Hill-Lewis welcomed the decision, highlighting the city’s growing reputation as one of the world’s premier cricket venues. He also pointed to the importance of hosting the SA20 final in the same year as South Africa is set to host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

“Cape Town is proud to once again host the Betway SA20 Final, and it comes as our city prepares for an extraordinary year of cricket,” the Mayor said.

“The league has become an anticipated fixture on our sporting and cultural calendar and hosting this final in the same year we welcome the world to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup shows why Cape Town is one of the great cricket cities. We look forward to warmly welcoming players, fans and visitors from around the world when the final comes to Newlands.”
