Pakistan is all set to boycott the match against India (India vs Pakistan) on February 15 for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The Pakistan government on Sunday suggested the Pakistan cricket team to abandon the high-octane match. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not yet issued a formal letter to the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the government’s directive.

According to the latest reports, the PCB has not yet sent a formal letter to the ICC, although the ICC has already warned that a boycott could lead to a series of punishments that will ultimately harm Pakistan cricket.

Why did Pakistan government ask PCB to boycott India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2026 match?

This whole situation happened due to the strict stance of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as they refused to travel to India to play the T20 World Cup 2026.

The BCB requested the council to shift their matches from India to Sri Lanka as they had security concerns regarding their players in India. The ICC accepted Bangladesh’s request and gave the board a 24-hour ultimatum. In response, BCB officials remained firm on their position. ICC named Scotland instead of Bangladesh.

After Bangladesh cricket team’s defeat from T20 World Cup 2026, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi said that they are thinking about all possibilities including boycotting the entire tournament. Days after a meeting between Naqvi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the government asked the cricket board to abandon the match against India as a show of protest and solidarity with Bangladesh.

What could happen next?

If Pakistan Cricket Board works as per the government’s suggestion then it can easily invite many troubles. ICC will not hesitate to sanction a series of strict action against him. Possible actions by the International Cricket Council could cause huge damage to both the revenue and reputation of Pakistan cricket.

According to media reports, the ICC not only questioned the Pakistan government’s decision, but also urged the PCB to consider the “significant and long-term implications for cricket in its country”, warning that the move could impact the global cricket ecosystem.

What steps can ICC take if Pakistan boycotts the match against India:

According to PTI report, ICC may drag Pakistan Cricket Board to court to compensate the host broadcaster. The India vs Pakistan match is considered to be the most valuable game in the 55-match T20 World Cup 2026. The India vs Pakistan match could cost between Rs 200 crore and Rs 250 crore, which is almost double compared to other matches.

Other possible steps ICC may take against Pakistan:

1. Loss of World Test Championship (WTC) points.

2. Negative impact on ICC rankings.

3. Top cricket playing countries may refuse to tour Pakistan for bilateral series.

4. Ban on foreign players in Pakistan Super League.

5. ICC can withhold PCB from its share of central revenue.
