On Tuesday, May 19, the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee officially announced the India national cricket team for the upcoming ODI series against the Afghanistan national cricket team.
The BCCI selection committee met in Guwahati to choose the team for the ODI series between India and Afghanistan, which will be extremely important for many Indian players, especially as preparations for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 are slowly taking shape.

India’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan has finally been announced, and the selectors have made several interesting decisions during their meeting in Guwahati. Shubman Gill will remain the captain of the ODI team, while Shreyas Iyer will serve as his deputy for the series.
As expected, senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retained their places in the team. Hardik Pandya has also been included, but both Rohit and Hardik have been selected subject to fitness clearance before the series. KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan are the two wicketkeeping options, with Kishan making a notable comeback in India’s ODI setup after being out of contention for a long time.
The biggest talking point in the team announcement has been the inclusion of Prince Yadav, Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey in the ODI squad for the first time. The selectors have rewarded the three youngsters for their strong performances in domestic and franchise cricket, signaling India’s intention to build depth ahead of major ICC tournaments.
Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar have also retained their places as the seam-bowling and spin all-round options respectively, while Kuldeep Yadav continues to lead the spin attack. Along with the new faces, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna are the pace options in the front line.
However, Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal did not get a place in the ODI team.

India vs Afghanistan ODI series schedule
The ODI series between India and Afghanistan will start from June 14 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. After this, both the teams will go to Lucknow for the second ODI, which will be played on June 17 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.
The third and last ODI match of the series will be held on June 20 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. All three matches are scheduled to start at 1:30 pm Indian time. Before the ODI series, India and Afghanistan will also face each other in the one-off Test match in Chandigarh from June 6.
India vs Afghanistan head to head record in ODI
India has completely dominated Afghanistan in ODI cricket in the last few years. Both the teams have faced each other four times in the 50-over format, out of which India has won three matches while one match was tied.
The most recent ODI encounter between the two sides took place during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in Delhi, where India won comfortably by eight wickets. Earlier, India managed to achieve a thrilling win by 11 runs during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 match in Southampton.
Interestingly, the Asia Cup 2018 encounter between the two teams in Dubai ended in a tie after a dramatic finish, while India’s first ODI win against Afghanistan came during the Asia Cup 2014 in Mirpur, where they won by eight wickets.
