Speaking to PTI, Sivaramakrishnan said that if the teenager continues to excel in international T20 cricket, his name should be considered for next year’s 50-over World Cup. According to the former spinner, Suryavanshi has the temperament and attacking ability to be a real match-winner in all white-ball formats. He believes that whenever a young player settles down and scores heavily, India will have a player who will be able to decide the game on his own.
“If he performs very well in the T20 format then he should definitely get a chance in the upcoming 50-over World Cup. He should get a chance because he is going to be a match-winner. When he scores runs, he is going to be a match-winner in all formats of white-ball cricket.” Sivaramakrishnan told PTI.
Sivaramakrishnan also stressed that India should avoid moving Suryavanshi in and out of the team. Instead, he urged head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer to give the teenager more time so that he can develop naturally at the highest level. The former spinner argued that young batsmen need consistent opportunities rather than frequent breaks, adding that regular cricket will help Suryavanshi improve technically and mentally.
“He should be given enough chances in white-ball cricket and see how he performs. He should continue. I mean, there is no point in wasting a young player and giving him a break or giving him rest. He doesn’t need rest. He can play the right way throughout the year. Especially as a batsman, he doesn’t need the fitness of a bowler. And batting for a long time will also give him the concentration, the mental work that he can do for a long time.” Added Sivaramakrishnan.

Competition for places in India’s ODI set-up remains intense
While Suryavanshi has now earned a place in India’s T20 team, breaking into the ODI team presents a much more difficult challenge. Despite stiff competition, Suryavanshi’s reputation extends far beyond the shortest format.
