Former national cricket team selector Devang Gandhi believes that Vaibhav Suryavanshi is worthy of making his debut for the senior cricket team at only 15 years of age. Coming off a stellar IPL 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals (RR), the budding opening batsman is set to make his debut in the top division of the game.
Sooner or later it is certain that the RR batsman is going to get the debut cap. After the conclusion of the multi-format series against Afghanistan, Team India has to face Ireland and then England for the white ball matches.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi is on the verge of debut in Team India
There are strong speculations that Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s name can be taken for the away series. Devang Gandhi says the budding talent has fulfilled all the criteria required to become a senior batsman for the national cricket team.
The left-handed batsman scored 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30 before concluding his IPL 2026 campaign. The Bihar batsman won the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs in the season and several other trophies due to his individual performances. He is arguably the cleanest striker with the ball in the Twenty20 format currently.

“I think the way to handle him is to reward him with the India cap because of the way he has performed in the last two years – he is hitting all the top bowlers in the world,” Gandhi told IANS.
The former India cricketer and former selector highlighted that smashing bowlers is not the only ability that Vaibhav possesses; The young batsman knows how to act as per the situation. His innings of 97 runs in 29 balls in the Eliminator and 96 runs in Qualifier 2 are two proofs of Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s pure cricketing instincts. Gandhi admitted that the left-handed batsman played these two innings in different conditions.
“It was heartening for me to see that in his last two innings, he scored 97 off 29 balls (in the Eliminator) and then 96 in Qualifier 2, but in different conditions. Wickets were falling at the other end. He was rotating the strike,” he says.
“So, if necessary, he can change gears, which is more dangerous for world cricket, right? A guy who is so mature that he can also take singles, play the position, still maintain a strike rate of over 200. So, for me, he has ticked all the boxes,” he said.
Gandhi supports Suryavanshi even for test
As of now, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is widely recognized as a white-ball batsman. But the former cricketer mentioned that if Vaibhav gets proper training and counseling, the batsman will be ready for Tests as well. In his imagination, Gandhi could clearly see the batsmen toying with the bowlers.
A player of that caliber definitely needs grooming and mentoring. Can you imagine him playing a Test match with the same authority? It would be great fun to see even half of it. It will be the bowlers who will suffer heart attacks. They must be wondering how to stop this boy. She’s absolutely amazing,” he said.
