Former RCB star set to retire from international cricket after T20 World Cup

Australian star and former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) cricketer Glenn Maxwell may retire from T20 International. According to the latest media claims, the 37-year-old may have already played his last T20 match for Australia.

If reports are to be believed, the Australia vs Oman match at Pallekele on February 20, 2026, could be his last match for his country in T20Is.

Glenn Maxwell has lost his rhythm in T-20

Over the years, Glenn Maxwell has emerged as an exciting all-rounder in Twenty20 cricket. He was also one of the top favorite names in the Indian Premier League. Despite all the credibility, this proven all-rounder gradually lost his temper. He failed to prove his claim on big occasions in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Australia crashed out of the 2026 T20 World Cup after a poor performance in the group stage. Consecutive defeats against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka forced his exit. In those 4 matches of the group stage, Maxwell scored only 62 runs in three innings and managed to take only 2 wickets, which was against Oman.

Notable statistics from Maxwell’s T20I career for Australia

If we look at the graph of Maxwell’s performance in T-20, the decline is clearly visible. He scored his last T20I half-century on August 16, 2025, against South Africa before a long 11-match series in which he did not score a single half-century.

On an overall basis, from 2012 to 2026, the all-rounder confirmed an average of 28.97 after playing 130 matches, which included five 100s. He also took 51 wickets.

Recent stints with Punjab Kings and RCB

It is worth noting that Maxwell has already been ruled out of IPL 2026 after being released by Punjab Kings (PBKS) last year. His performance in the IPL has also not been good in the last few seasons. Glenn Maxwell scored only 48 runs at an average of 8.00 in 6 innings for PBKS in IPL 2025.

A season ago, when he was with RCB, the Australian all-rounder had a batting average of only 5.77 as he managed only 52 runs in 9 innings. His batting average for RCB in 2023 was 33.33. His decline began in 2024, possibly culminating in retirement.

Overall in his T20 career, the Melbourne-born player has played a total of 503 matches and scored 10986 runs at a batting average of 27.53 and 198 runs at an economy rate of 7.86 with his spin bowling skills. His highest T20 score as a middle-order batsman is 154*.
