There is speculation over Gautam Gambhir’s future as India’s Test head coach after his recent struggles in the longer format. Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie, who coached the Pakistan men’s team for just seven months in 2024, said he is not interested in applying for the India Test job.
India won the Asia Cup 2025 and Champions Trophy 2025 but struggled in Test cricket. They suffered a defeat against South Africa at home, which exposed the deep red ball issue and intensified the scrutiny of Gambhir. He became the first coach of Team India to suffer defeat in two Test series on home soil.
Jason Gillespie refuses to replace Gautam Gambhir as India coach
Jason Gillespie ended the discussion about him becoming India’s Test coach with a short and clear answer. A fan on social media asked him to take over the captaincy after India lost twice at home.
The user said that India was struggling badly and urged Gillespie to become the head coach of the team. Gillespie left no scope for debate. He replied with only two words: “No, thank you.” The former Australian fast bowler said that he has no interest in coaching India in Test cricket.
One user posted to Gillespie: “Jason, you need to coach India now because they are not just losing but getting eliminated twice at home. They seriously need you.”
Gillespie replied: “No, thank you.”
Jason Gillespie’s short and turbulent tenure as Pakistan coach
Jason Gillespie’s first full-time international coaching role was short and tumultuous. He took charge of the Pakistan men’s team in 2024, but stepped down within a few months after a difficult period, which included mixed results and increasing issues with the Pakistan Cricket Board.
During his tenure, Pakistan suffered a home Test series defeat to Bangladesh, but also managed an impressive series win over England. Gillespie decided to part ways before completing his contract, later speaking openly about the challenges he faced in the role.
He has coached the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League, worked extensively in county cricket with Yorkshire and Sussex during the 2010s, and has had roles with South Australia and Papua New Guinea.
He also spent time in the IPL setup as bowling coach with Kings XI Punjab, now known as Punjab Kings. Those strong domestic and franchise stints have kept Gillespie’s name in regular discussion for red-ball coaching roles in Test cricket.
Gautam under intense pressure after tough start as India’s Test coach
Gautam Gambhir took charge of the Indian team as head coach in mid-2024. Since then, India have played 19 Tests and won only seven. They registered home wins against Bangladesh and West Indies.
However, results in red-ball cricket have been worrying. India suffered a defeat against New Zealand at home, lost the Test series in Australia and failed to beat South Africa at home. These performances have raised serious questions on the direction of the team in Test cricket.
Gautam Gambhir is now the only Indian Test coach under whose leadership India has lost five home Tests. He has also overseen two home whitewashes, something that had never happened before in Indian cricket.
Gambhir still enjoys support in the Board of Control for Cricket in India. However, his future as a Test coach may be reviewed after the next T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, VVS Laxman has shown no interest in the role and is content working at the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru.
