Former Mumbai Indians (MI) cricketer Tirumalasetti Suman, commonly known as T Suman, is shocked to hear that Rohit Sharma may announce his retirement from international cricket after the conclusion of the India vs England ODI series at Lord’s, London on Sunday.
Throughout the years, Rohit Sharma has remained one of the key players of the India national cricket team across formats, and he was considered one of the leading contenders to represent the country in the upcoming ODI World Cup in 2027.
Tirumalasetti Suman is in shock as Rohit Sharma may retire after India vs England match on Sunday
Suman was not able to digest the fact that after the assurance of ODI captain Shubman Gill, Rohit had to think about his retirement.
In recent times, Gill mentioned that both Virat Kohli and Rohit are integral parts of the ODI squad ahead of the 2027 World Cup, which came as a sign of assurance on the future of both the experienced batsmen with the Indian cricket team.
T Suman said in a video on his YouTube channel, “It was a shocking thing. Just before this series, captain Shubman Gill came forward and said that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are an integral part of the ODI team. Gill himself had said that they are important players before the World Cup. But suddenly this news came out. The selectors have told Rohit that he will not be a part of the plans for the 2027 World Cup.”
Tirumalasetti Suman explains why the selectors might have thought beyond Rohit Sharma
From a selector’s point of view, the former Mumbai Indians cricketer might have thought the same about dropping Rohit Sharma from the team, as there are several young openers, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, who are waiting for their turn to represent the team in the format.
“The selectors might have thought that the World Cup is in South Africa and there is a year, so youngsters should be given a chance because there is still time and that is why they told Rohit that there are players like Jaiswal who are in form and should play international cricket.”

However, Suman has contrasting views due to the former Indian captain’s achievements with the national cricket team. Suman points out that the Mumbaikars were successful in different conditions, whether the match was in Australia or South Africa, where the ball spun faster with extra bounce and Rohit Sharma scored a lot of runs.
He also points out that even after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy in the ODI format, the opening batsman kept his focus on fitness as he wanted to be a part of the 2027 ODI World Cup as a player.
“Let’s look at Rohit’s performance. He won the T20 World Cup as a leader and batsman. After that, he won the Champions Trophy in the same ODI format and stepped down as captain. Okay. After that, he didn’t get upset. He improved his physique. Why? With the ODI World Cup being an unfulfilled dream,” Suman said.
He further added, “After the Champions Trophy, on bouncy pitches in Australia, he got ‘Player of the Series’. After this, scored two fifty-plus scores in the South Africa series. In the New Zealand series, he could not take advantage of the starts, but in the Afghanistan series he scored again. There were only two bad scores in the England series, that too on spongy wickets.”
