Pakistan faced England in a Super 8 match at the Pallakelle International Cricket Stadium, Pallakelle on Tuesday. Harry Brook’s century took his team to the semi-finals and they defeated Pakistan by 2 wickets. Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first. The Green men were once again seen struggling against a quality bowling attack as they lost Sam Ayub early in the innings.
The southpaw once again got out early after playing a careless shot against Jofra Archer, Ayub was seen struggling with Archer’s pace and little swing as he was returned to the pavilion after scoring 7 runs off one ball. Soon the Men in Green lost their captain Salman Ali Aga and Liam Dawson took the wicket.
Sahibzada Farhan was the only striker for Pakistan
After this, Babar Azam and Sahibzada Farhan made a small partnership of 46 runs. Babar struggled against spin, especially against Adil Rashid, before being dismissed for another low score of 25 off 24 balls. Farhan once again took control at the other end and continued his excellent form with another half-century.
He is proving his worth in his place in the team as he has been the leading run scorer for the team with 283 runs to his name in the tournament. Farhan was out on the score of 63 runs in 45 balls. After his wicket at 122/4, Pakistan lost four wickets for only 27 runs and could only manage 164/9.
Harry Brook played the captain’s innings
England had the worst start to chase the target, with Phil Salt, the top scorer in the previous game, out for a duck on the first ball, while Shaheen Shah Afridi took a wicket in his return game. The fast bowler struck in his second over against a struggling Jos Buttler as the latter’s run of low scores continued and he was dismissed for 2 runs.
Shaheen was the best bowler in the powerplay, taking four wickets in four overs. However, there was a counter-attack from captain Harry Brook, who promoted himself to No. 3 and played a captain’s innings, scoring 100 from 51 balls, which included 10 fours and four sixes, with a strike rate of 196.08.
Despite the early wickets it was Harry Brook who ensured England were at home as he was out with 10 runs needed in the last three overs. England’s other batsmen made small contributions to a decent total of 165 runs.
All-rounder Will Jacques played another important innings, scoring 28 runs from 23 balls, finishing as the second highest scorer for the team as he was out with five runs needed. They became the first team to qualify for the last four as they have made a good recovery despite a rough start to the campaign.
