India vice-captain Tilak Verma was dismissed cheaply after England produced another superb display of fielding in the opening match of the five-match T20 series in Durham on Wednesday (July 1). Meanwhile, Tilak Verma finally broke his silence on the looming Super Over controversy in Sri Lanka.
After another flop show, Tilak was brutally attacked by Indian cricket fans on social media as he was selected ahead of some in-form batsmen like Rajat Patidar. In his last 10 innings, he managed to score only one half-century in the T20I format, and now fans are demanding his ouster.
England produce another fielding masterclass to dismiss Tilak Verma
Tilak Verma came in to bat at number five in the first T20I against England and showed some intent, but England fast bowler Saqib Mahmood found a way to make the Indian vice-captain his favourite.
Shakib bowled a low full toss aimed at the stumps, and Tilak moved inside the crease and tried to play a smart scoop shot towards fine leg for an easy boundary.
But the bullet did not hit properly. The ball took the inside edge of the left-handed batsman’s bat and went high in the air instead of clearing the fielder. Liam Dawson, who was fielding at short fine leg, responded brilliantly at the right time.
Dawson ran backwards, kept track of the ball and, despite losing his balance, completed a spectacular catch well above his head. With that excellent catch, England sent Tilak back to the pavilion after scoring 13 runs off 13 balls, as Saqib Mahmood got another wicket in Durham.
Saqib Mahmood became Tilak Verma’s biggest nightmare
With this dismissal, Saqib Mahmood continued his complete dominance over Tilak Verma in T20I cricket. The England fast bowler dismissed the left-handed batsman for the second time in their two meetings.
Tilak has faced only three balls from Shakib in T20I cricket, scoring only one run and getting out both times. On the other hand, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s debut is inevitable as Sanju Samson’s nightmare continues in the first T20I vs England.
Tilak Verma’s poor performance continues
Well, the left-hander has been struggling badly in recent games. After playing two unbeaten match-winning innings, the left-handed batsman has failed to convert consecutive starts into big scores. His inconsistency has put new pressure on his place in India’s middle order.
His last 10 scores are: 13, 55, 19, 48, 21, 27, 44, 1, 31 and 25. Even during IPL 2026, the Hyderabad star failed to perform consistently for Mumbai Indians. After his latest failure in Durham, fans are questioning how many opportunities Tilak will get.
However, thanks to quick half-centuries from captain Shreyas Iyer (68) and Abhishek Sharma (59), India managed to post 189/7 on the board in their 20 overs. Shivam Dubey made a valuable contribution of 42 runs on 21 balls in the first T20 match against England in Durham.
