South Africa Took complete control of the second test in Guwahati Senuran Muthusamyfirst century of marco jansonOn the second day, the visiting team’s explosive 93 runs made a strong score of 489 runs. India were forced to be in damage-control mode for most of the day, but managed to survive a small portion of the game before stumps, and finished on 9/0. With the Proteas dictating the terms throughout the session, fans and analysts lauded Muthusamy and Johnson for a day that completely belonged to South Africa.
Senuran Muthusamy’s brilliant first century set the tone for South Africa
South Africa resumed at 247/6, but Muthusamy thereafter excelled in his flair and technique. The left-handed batsman, who had shown glimpses of maturity in previous tours, played the best innings of his career – a 109-run knock filled with calm footwork, precise shot selection and tremendous discipline.
He started the morning cautiously before opening after crossing fifty. His ten fours and two sixes ensured that South Africa kept scoring at a good pace despite India’s best efforts. Each milestone was greeted with loud applause from the dressing room, with Muthusamy’s century drawing special praise for his composure and timing in pressure situations.
Marco Jansen’s power-hitting takes Proteas to 489
If Muthusamy opens the innings, Johnson fires it up. The tall all-rounder scored 93 runs with brilliant strokes, which included six fours and seven sixes, which is the joint-highest by a lower-order batsman in a Test innings on Indian soil.
Jensen counter-attacked the Indian spinners with fearless intent. Ravindra Jadeja For two big strikes and then moving on. Mohammad Siraj With equal rights. His clean hitting took South Africa past 440 and ensured Tails added vital runs. Together Keshav MaharajThey put together a stubborn partnership for the last wicket before falling just short of a maiden Test century – cut down to one run. -Kuldeep Yadav Googly.
Indian bowlers work hard as Kuldeep Yadav leads the resistance
India’s bowlers fought hard on a non-reactive surface. -Kuldeep Yadav Emerging as the standout performer, he took 4 wickets and repeatedly threatened to drift and deceive. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad SirajAnd Jadeja scored two goals each, but struggled to maintain control for long periods as Jensen’s counter-attacks kept shifting the momentum back to the visitors.
simon harmer He was the only South African batsman not to reach double figures – another indicator of how comprehensively the Proteas dominated the innings.
India steady till stumps but mountain awaits
Facing huge scores, India’s openers played a brief but crucial spell of nine overs without any loss. Yashasvi Jaiswal (7*) and KL Rahul (2*) showed good judgment and took India to 9/0 at the end of play.
However, with South Africa having already scored the highest first innings score by any visiting team in India and in danger of losing the Test, the hosts now face a bigger challenge. A disciplined batting effort will be required on the third day if India are to keep themselves in the competition.
Here’s how fans reacted:
It’s a stump for day two!
Another exciting day’s play has ended 🙌#TeamIndia The openers will resume proceedings tomorrow ⏳
