The Indian Premier League (IPL) is preparing to appoint a new skipper allegedly, with the expectation of major changes before 2026. According to reports, Delhi capitals are likely to get a new captain for IPL 2026, in which all -rounder Exer Patel continues as a player, but not as a leader.
Delhi Capital made a stunning call before IPL 2025, which was handed over to Exer Patel after Rishabh Pant’s move for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). While many people speculated that KL Rahul would take charge of the franchise, he rejected the leadership role, which opened the door to step as a captain for Exer.

According to a report by the news24 journalist, Delhi Capital is considering a captaincy change before 2026, in which Exer Patel is expected to continue as only one player and not as captain.

The franchise may appoint experienced names such as KL Rahul or FAF Do Plessis, while small options such as Triston Stabs can be considered part of their long -term plan.
For now, neither the franchise nor Exer has issued an official statement, which leaves the captaincy position open for speculation.
Exer is removed from India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad as T20I vice-captain
Exer was recently removed from Vice-Captainy in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, which was starting on 9 September. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the team, while Shubman Gill has been appointed as the vice-captain.
Gill, who has recently taken over the test side and already acts as ODI deputy, is now part of the leadership group in all formats. The right-handed batsman had an impressive test series in England, where he scored 754 runs with four centuries and draws India 2–2.
Meanwhile, Exer, who served as the vice-captain in the England T20I series earlier this year, would return as a lead all-rounder. He played an important role in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 Triumph and has a similar impact in the Asia Cup.
Delhi capitals missed narrowly at one place in IPL 2025 playoffs
Under the leadership of Exer Patel, Delhi Capital, IPL, missed qualifying for 2025 playoffs. Exer Patel contributed with both Bat and Ball, scored 263 runs in 11 innings and took five wickets in 11 matches at a strike rate of 157.48 and 11 matches in 8.47 economy.
The franchise made changes in front of the mega auction, participated with former captain Rishabh Pant and appointed Exer Patel as the new leader. The team won their first four matches but struggled to maintain continuity with the progress of the season.
