Former Indian all -rounder Irfan Pathan has made a bold prediction on Shubman Gill before the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 starting on 9 September in UAE. Pathan also said that Gill can become the captain of India’s all-format, looking at his appointment as the vice-captain of the Indian team for the Asia Cup.
Gill, who last played the T20I match for India in July 2024, has been appointed as the vice-captain of India. Suryakumar Yadav turned 35 in a few days, BCCI considered Gill for captaincy even in the shortest format. The 25 -year -old batsman recently took over as a Test captain in a series against England.

Pathan told Revsports, “Look, Indian cricket is run in a special way. And it will be run in a special way. It’s not what people outside it think. Not media or fans. It is like a train engine.”
He said, “The coaches will be directed to all how the engine runs. The players need to know who the engine is. The signal needs to be sent to them. They need to be made aware that Shubman Gill is a leader. And I agree with the idea process,” he said.
This is not a long -term solution – Irfan Pathan on divided captaincy
Irfan Pathan also said that being a three captain for three different formats is not a long-term solution. Pathan said that Shubman Gill would consider his success in the IPL and England series and captain the captaincy in all formats in the future.
Pathan said, “I don’t think three captains work for three different formats, and this is not a long-term solution. Gill is the right way to go about it as an all-format captain over a period of time.”
“Yes, he will improve and be better. And he is not captaining the England series only. He has captained and done well. Now, he is the captain of India’s red ball and has done well in England. I don’t see it as a problem if they are captained in future forms.”
Shubman Gill prepared India’s future all-format captain
Shubman Gill led India from the front with a brilliant performance in a five -match series against England recently. He scored 754 runs at an average of 75.40, including four centuries. India attracted the series 2–2 as Gill started its term on a positive note.
The selectors believe that it will develop into a confident all-format captain with full support of the dressing room. Discussion about veteran players continues in Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Odis, with priority in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Gill is to adapt to the aggressive demands of the format as India’s T20I captain. Suryakumar Yadav will lead India in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. The 2026 T20 World Cup attention is expected to move towards ODI cricket, where Gill can be prepared as a future leader.
