The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is desperate to replace Brendon McCullum as Test captain with Andy Flower, who was sacked from Test team duties days after the home series defeat against New Zealand. If Flower takes over as England’s red-ball head coach, he will be allowed to skip Test matches for the IPL.
It is believed that Stephen Fleming is also in the race as his journey with Chennai Super Kings ended on Monday. With Fleming joining the race to become England’s next Test coach, the ECB is set to offer Flower a split coaching role.
England Cricket Board ready to give divided coaching role to Andy Flower
The ECB’s keen interest in Andy Flower comes as England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive Richard Gould said he was prepared to offer the experienced coach a flexible role, including a split-coaching structure.
Flower has been associated with several franchises for various T20 leagues around the world, including Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he won two IPL trophies in the last two seasons.
As the ECB seeks Test success, their frustration for the Zimbabwean cricket legend is understandable, as he helped the England national cricket team win three Ashes between 2009 and 2014. This was the period when the Three Lions also became No. 1 in the ICC Test rankings.
Will ECB stand firm on Andy Flower joining RCB for IPL?
If the ECB allows Flower to work in a split coaching position, the coach can also take over the coaching responsibilities of RCB. But would he accept the ECB’s offer, even if he is allowed to juggle his other responsibilities with other teams? The question remains.
Former India keeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, who is also RCB’s batting coach, raises an important point. England cricketers like Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethel and Will Jacks are among the star cricketers of England who are associated with IPL teams. Most of the England cricketers like Harry Brook and Ben Duckett prioritize national cricket team duties over the Indian Premier League.
Jofra Archer, who played the entire IPL 2026 season for Rajasthan Royals, had to hear a lot of criticism from some former international cricketers for keeping the franchise ahead of the league ahead of the England cricket team’s fixtures. If the ECB allows Andy Flower to continue with his IPL commitments, what will be their stance on the participation of their players in the T20 league? It will be interesting to see.
The Telegraph claimed in its report, “Flowers are believed to be open to talks with England, but he would not want to move immediately away from his roles with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), where he has won the last two IPLs, and London Spirit.”
It added, “Having previously worked with the Trent Rockets, his first Hundred campaign with the Spirit begins next week, and could conclude just three days before the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley on August 19. England want their new coach in charge by then.”
Stephen Fleming can also be considered as Brendon McCullum’s successor
Stephen Fleming’s departure from Chennai Super Kings makes the situation more interesting as he also has a bag full of experience as a coach.
As a former New Zealand captain, he should also have a connection with Brendon McCullum, who played under him. However, with Stephen Fleming currently only a possibility as coach of the England Test team, Andy Flower’s chances are not as intense.
