England surprised the cricket world by appointing Australian Marcus North as the new national selector.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) can take a historic decision in an appointment. The board can appoint a former Australian cricketer as the national selector for the first time.

The ESB is set to appoint former Australia international Marcus North as its new national selector, in place of Luke Wright. According to the Telegraph report, Marcus North has been selected after the final interviews this week. However, an official statement regarding the appointment has not been released yet.

This will be a historic decision of the England Cricket Board

If the claims prove true, Marcus will become the first foreign man to be selected for the North of England men’s team. The ECB has mentioned certain criteria in its recruitment notification for the post of national selector to replace Luke Wright, who has stepped down from the post. One of the highlights of cricket is to understand England’s cricket talent well from the grassroots level, i.e. county cricket.

In its official release, the ECB noted, “Significant professional experience and in-depth knowledge of international and first-class cricket, including knowledge of emerging players and the county network” is mandatory in the resumes of applicants.

The criteria the ECB is looking for in its future national team selectors:

  1. Demonstrable experience in talent identification
  2. Strong understanding of data and analytics within cricket
  3. Ability to manage relationships with cricketers at international and county level

Why should the ECB select the former Australian batsman for this post?

Marcus North has met all the above criteria, and undoubtedly, he is one of the best candidates for the interview session.

Despite being Australian, Marcus North has extensive experience in English cricket, as he played for several county teams and then also worked in a managerial role.

Since 2018, he has been the Director of Cricket at Durham. Worked here with England Test captain Ben Stokes. If the ECB selects North for the role, the 46-year-old will have to work with head coach Brendon McCullum, director of cricket Rob Key and Test and limited-overs captains Stokes and Harry Brook respectively.

What will be Marcus North’s role?

The 4-1 Ashes defeat against arch-rival Australia is still haunting English cricket. In the Brendon McCullum era, the England cricket team has gained a reputation for igniting county talent. The duty of the national selector will be to act as a bridge between the cricketers of county cricket and the national cricket team. North’s experience in English domestic cricket will help them unearth some new talent.

Opener Jack Crawley is among those batsmen who proved to be a complete flop against Australia. It is expected that the Three Lions will soon name a new opening batsman in place of Crawley.

The BBC claimed in its report, “Under McCullum, England have often overlooked proven county cricket performers in favor of players who have the quality for international cricket. It will perhaps be North’s role to provide balance to England’s approach.”

“He may have only limited involvement in the process of selecting the team for the first Test against New Zealand starting on June 4 at Lord’s,” it said.
