England continued their winning streak in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 by defeating Sri Lanka by 89 runs on Sunday (October 11). The Nat Sciver-Brunt-led side comprehensively defeated the co-hosts in Colombo to top the points table.
Captain Sciver-Brunt led from the front with a sensational century, while spinner Sophie Ecclestone bowled a brilliant spell of 4-17.
Nat Sciver-Brunt unbeaten in Women’s World Cup
England, who came to bat first, were in a critical position after being reduced to 49/2 in the 10th over. Both England openers – Amy Jones (11) and Tammy Beaumont (32) – got starts but could not capitalize.
Sri Lanka also had a chance to dismiss Sciver-Brunt cheaply, but they dismissed him for three and managed to punish them by scoring 117 runs.

In an innings where no other England batsman could score more than 32 runs, it was Sciver-Brunt’s century that ultimately made the difference in the match. With wickets falling at regular intervals at one end, the England captain remained cautious at first.
At the end of the 40th over, England were 179/6 before Sciver-Brunt burst onto the scene. As a result, England scored 49 runs in the last five overs and finished on 253/9, the highest in the ongoing competition. Premadasa Stadium has the highest score.
England bowlers destroyed Sri Lanka
In the end the score of 253 proved more than enough as England bowled out Sri Lanka for just 164 runs. Sri Lanka, chasing the target, suffered a big blow in the beginning when their charismatic captain Chamari Athapaththu was forced to retire hurt.
However, openers Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama kept their team in the lead by taking the score to 95/1 before being dismissed for 35 runs. Three runs later, Samarawickrama was also gone as England put themselves in the driver’s seat.
Athapaththu returned in the middle but it did not make much difference as she was out for 15, leaving her team at 116/5. Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually all out for 164 runs in the 46th over.
