The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided not to extend the contract of women’s team head coach Muhammad Wasim after the team’s poor performance in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. The board is reportedly exploring the option of appointing a foreign coach to bring a fresh perspective.

Pakistan had a forgettable campaign in the ODI World Cup as they failed to win a single win in the seven matches played. The team suffered four defeats, while three matches were abandoned due to rain. They finished seventh in the eight-team table and could slip further down if Bangladesh wins their next game.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has prepared to dismiss Mohammad Wasim from the post of head coach of Pakistan women’s team.

According to a report in Times of India, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was dissatisfied with the poor performance of the women’s team under the leadership of Mohammad Wasim.

“PCB insiders revealed that chairman Mohsin Naqvi was unhappy with the team’s overall performance and Wasim’s inability to bring visible improvement,” the report said.

Wasim was appointed the head coach of the women’s team last year. Under his tenure, Pakistan lost against Sri Lanka in the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup semi-finals and could only manage one win from four matches at the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.

PCB considering appointing foreign coach to improve Pakistan women’s cricket

Muhammad Wasim came under heavy scrutiny, primarily due to the team’s stagnant batting performance, which was expected to improve under a former international batsman. Pakistan’s batting remained their weakest department in major tournaments.

According to PTI, several staff members reported that Wasim was difficult to contact and lacked effective communication. His strained relationships and inability to inspire progress reportedly contributed to the PCB’s decision not to renew his contract.

In response to this, the board is now considering appointing a foreign coach to bring new ideas and direction to the women’s team. An official announcement regarding the appointment is expected soon as the PCB looks to reform its women’s cricket structure.

Pakistan’s ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 campaign ends without a win

Pakistan’s Women’s ODI World Cup campaign was plagued by inconsistency, rain interruptions and a series of heavy defeats, leaving them without a single win in the tournament.

The team started their campaign with a seven-wicket loss to Bangladesh, which was followed by an 88-run loss to arch-rivals India. They showed some fight against Australia, but a brilliant century and disciplined bowling performance from Beth Mooney gave Pakistan another defeat.

Pakistan came close to achieving its first ODI win over England, but due to continuous rain the result could not be achieved. The weather continued to affect their campaign, with the crucial match against New Zealand being abandoned without a single ball being bowled.

The team then suffered a heavy 150-run defeat to South Africa, and their final game against Sri Lanka was also washed out due to rain, ending their disappointing performance in the World Cup.

As part of a compromise arrangement, Sri Lanka was chosen along with India to host Pakistan’s matches at a neutral venue. India and Pakistan face each other only in international tournaments and on neutral grounds.
