Dewald Brevis became Pakistani, threw himself across the boundary in the match between West Indies vs South Africa and gave a gift of 6 to Shai Hope

South African cricketer Dewald Brewis dropped the catch of West Indies captain Shai Hope during the Super 8 match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The match between South Africa and West Indies is being played on Thursday 26 February at the prestigious Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

South Africa captain Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to bowl first in his second Super 8 match. He fielded the same playing eleven in the match against India, where they won. Meanwhile, West Indies made one change to their playing eleven with Roston Chase replacing Akeal Hosein.

Shai Hope makes early escape after Dewald Brewis drops catch

Shai Hope got a lucky chance early in the innings. Keshav Maharaj bowled a short ball and Hope went back to play a pull shot on the last ball of the first over. The shot did not look good, but the ball went high towards deep midwicket.

Dewald Brewis ran to his left and took the catch near the boundary. However, he was moving backwards and could not maintain his balance. He fell on the ropes and failed to push the ball back into play, resulting in a catch for six runs.

Hope survived and continued his innings after the boundary. However, in the end this mistake did not cost South Africa too much. Kagiso Rabada dismissed Hope for 16 in the third over when Hope bowled a ball outside the off stump. Quinton de Kock took an easy catch behind the stumps.

South Africa’s pace attack triggers West Indies’ collapse

West Indies scored 29 runs in the first two overs. The momentum changed quickly after Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi came into the attack. South Africa’s fast bowlers destroyed the top order, taking four wickets for 14 runs in the next 12 balls, leaving the Windies in trouble at 43/4.

Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer, Brandon King and Roston Chase were all out during the collapse. Hetmyer lofted his first ball into the air, but Corbyn Bosch dived inside the circle and failed to take the catch, giving him a brief reprieve.

However, two balls later, Rabada struck again as Hetmyer misjudged the pull shot. Keshav Maharaj moved to his right over mid-wicket and took a clean catch, sending Hetmyer back for 2 and securing another important breakthrough for South Africa.

West Indies vs South Africa Playing XI

“Well, we have already seen two games here. One team scored 187 runs during the 11:00 am start, while New Zealand scored 175 runs in the night game. For me, I want to bat first, get runs on the board, and hope the surface gets roughed up a bit to give the bowlers a chance to work later on.” Shaun Pollock said in the pitch report.

South Africa’s playing XI: Aiden Markram (captain), Quinton de Kock (wk), Ryan Rickelton, Dewald Brewis, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Johnson, Corbin Bosch, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Keshav Maharaj.

West Indies playing eleven: Brandon King, Shai Hope (captain and wicketkeeper), Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Roston Chase, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Jason Holder, Matthew Ford, Gudakesh Moti, Shamar Joseph.
