The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially reacted to rumors of sacking India head coach Gautam Gambhir ahead of the white-ball series against New Zealand on home soil.
Gautam Gambhir has been incredible as a head coach in white-ball cricket, but when it comes to Test cricket, the Indian cricket team has faced the worst. Under Gambhir’s tenure, India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia and a Test series on home soil after 10 years.
BCCI breaks silence on rumors of sacking Gautam Gambhir
South Africa whitewashed India 2-0 in a two-match Test series last month, and in 2024, New Zealand whitewashed them 3-0 in a three-match Test series on home soil after almost three decades. These Test defeats have raised serious questions about Gambhir’s credibility as a Test coach.

Amid calls for Gambhir’s sacking, there were rumors that the BCCI has unofficially approached batting legend and National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief VVS Laxman for the post of national team Test head coach. But Laxman refused to coach the Indian Test team.
Now BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia has dismissed all the rumors by denying that Laxman was approached for Test coaching. Aaj Tak quoted Saikia as saying, “There was no discussion about changing Gautam’s Test coaching; such things are nothing but rumours.”
