A recent report regarding Rohit Sharma’s fitness has shocked everyone amid the ongoing three-match ODI series between the Indian national cricket team and the Afghanistan national cricket team.
The former Indian captain, who has already retired from Test and T20I cricket, is reportedly suffering from a serious hamstring injury which could impact the final stages of his international career. Even Jonty Rhodes said that Rohit Sharma is not the greatest looking athlete.
Grade 3 hamstring injury puts Rohit Sharma’s 2027 World Cup dreams in jeopardy
According to a Cricblogger report, Rohit Sharma’s hamstring injury may make it extremely difficult for him to play regularly in the coming month, and this will put his dream of playing in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe in serious jeopardy.
Reports revealed that Rohit has suffered a 16mm grade 3 hamstring injury. This is considered the most serious type of hamstring injury as it involves a complete tear of the muscle or tendon and can severely impact movement and performance.
“A Grade 3 hamstring tear is the most serious form of hamstring injury. It indicates a complete tear or rupture of the hamstring muscle or tendon, resulting in significant loss of function,” Cricblogger quoted a source as saying.
Rohit Sharma ready for careful management planning
Such injuries usually take a long time to heal, at least three to six months. In some cases, the player may also require surgery before returning to competitive cricket. It is also being said that Rohit’s injury will need to be managed very carefully.
He may have to balance rehabilitation, recovery, fitness work and workload management before participating in high-intensity sports. Another big concern is that it may not always be possible for the right-handed opening batsman to achieve 100 per cent fitness.
Even if he returns to action, there is a possibility of him missing important matches if the hamstring problem flares up again. The only positive thing is that Rohit has managed this injury well over the years and there is no immediate reason to panic.
A source close to Rohit said, “There will be no problem of any kind.”
BCCI under scanner regarding Rohit Sharma’s fitness clearance
Interestingly, BCCI’s Center of Excellence is declaring Rohit fit to play in the ongoing ODI series against Afghanistan. However, it is not clear whether he will now have to choose matches based on the reaction of his hamstring.
Hamstring issues are nothing new as the Hitman has struggled with the issue from time to time since the 2017-18 season. During IPL 2026, Rohit Sharma, who is set to overtake Rahul Dravid, also missed a few matches due to the same injury.
There has been no official confirmation from the BCCI or Rohit about this, but if the reports are true, then he will have to manage his schedule and workload carefully to keep his hopes of playing in the ICC World Cup 2027 alive.
