Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir praised Yashasvi Jaiswal after he scored a century in the third and final ODI against South Africa in Visakhapatnam on Saturday, December 6. Gambhir also said that Jaiswal has a lot of potential but he needs to learn to control his pace in the 50-over format.

Jaiswal entered the third ODI under pressure after low scores in the first two matches. However, the young opener batted with patience initially and scored an unbeaten 116 off 121 balls, which included 12 fours and two sixes. India won by nine wickets with 10 overs remaining and won the series 2–1.

This is the beginning of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s career – Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir said that he was happy with how Yashasvi Jaiswal carried his innings in the match. Gambhir said that ODI does not always demand complete aggression. He said that once Jaiswal learns the right pace for different phases of the 50-over game, he will reach the top level.

“We have seen the quality he (Jaiswal) has, especially what he does in Test cricket. This is the beginning of his career, especially in white-ball cricket. He has a huge future ahead of him,” Gambhir said.

“In ODIs, you don’t need to play aggressively because if you split the format into 30 and 20 overs, things will become a lot easier. He was just playing his fourth game. The moment he figures out what pace he has to bat in the 50-over format, the sky is the limit for him,” he said.

I don’t give excuses in press conferences – Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir hit back at the critics who targeted him after India’s Test series defeat in South Africa. He pointed out that many people ignored key facts, including the absence of Shubman Gill in the first Test, where the difference was only 30 runs.

Gambhir said, “There was a lot of discussion because the results (in the Test series) did not go in our favour. No media wrote that our first Test match was without a captain, who did not bat in both the innings. And the difference was 30 runs. Just because I do not give excuses in press conferences, it does not mean that you do not show the facts to the world or the country.”

“People also said things that have nothing to do with cricket. An IPL owner also wrote about split coaching. It is very important for people to stay in their domain. Because if we do not go into someone’s domain, then they also have no right to come into our domain.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his first ODI century

South Africa scored 270 runs before being bowled out in 47.5 overs. Quinton de Kock top-scored with 106, while Temba Bavuma and Dewald Brewis added useful runs in the middle. For India, Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna took four wickets each.

India’s goal was completely one-sided. Yashasvi Jaiswal completed his first ODI century in 111 balls. He scored an unbeaten 116 off 121 balls, taking India to 271/1 in just 39.5 overs. Rohit Sharma added 75 runs and Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 65 runs.

Jaiswal had scored only 40 runs in the first two matches and was under pressure due to competition for places. With this innings, he became the sixth Indian to score a century in all three formats. He now has nine international centuries to his name across all formats.
