After the conclusion of the second T20 match against the New Zealand national cricket team, India national cricket team captain Suryakumar Yadav openly said that he was angry with his teammate Ishan Kishan.
Suryakumar Yadav said he was angry at Ishan Kishan because the wicketkeeper-batsman did not give him strike when he returned during the powerplay when India was chasing the target.
I don’t know what Ishaan ate for lunch – Suryakumar Yadav
Ishan Kishan is currently having the time of his life, as after a surprise selection in the T20 World Cup 2026, he also got a place in India’s playing XI against New Zealand due to Tilak Verma’s injury.
He could not take advantage of the opportunity he got in the first game, but in the second T20 match in Raipur, Ishan Kishan thrashed the Kiwi bowlers.
Chasing 209, India were at 6 for 2, when Ishan Kishan launched a ferocious counterattack and scored 76 runs in 32 balls with the help of 11 fours and 4 sixes.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Suryakumar Yadav was full of praise for the youngster and said:
“(Is India going to play like this?) I don’t know what Ishan ate for lunch or what pre-workout he did before the game, but I have never seen anyone bat like this at 2 for 6 and still finish the powerplay around 67 or 70. I thought that was incredible. Chasing 200 or 210, that’s what we want from batsmen – go out there, express yourself, find your positions. But be happy. And that’s exactly what he did today.”
I was angry that he didn’t give me strike in the powerplay – Suryakumar Yadav on Ishan Kishan
India’s T20I captain made a cheeky comment on Ishan Kishan, saying that the wicketkeeper-batsman upset him by not giving strike in the powerplay. Suryakumar Yadav said:
“(Had the best seat in the house) I was angry that he didn’t give me the strike in the powerplay, but that’s OK. I had some time, played eight or ten balls, and I knew that later, when I have time, I can cover it.
Talking about his 82-run innings, Suryakumar Yadav said that he always batted well in the nets and it was about replicating the same in the matches. He said:
“(The biggest plus – his own form) Absolutely. As I have said earlier, I was batting really well in the nets. Everything I did back home in the last two or three weeks helped me. I got a good break to spend time with my family and friends, had good practice sessions and I am really enjoying what is happening at the moment.
Yes, I think it was an incredible effort – Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar also gave special praise to his bowlers as they managed to restrict the Blackcaps to 208 despite heavy dew. He said:
“(Limiting them to 208 around the dew) Yes, I think it was an incredible effort. When they were around 100 or 110 for 2, we thought it would be a total of 225 or 230, like it happened in Nagpur. But the way Kuldeep, Varun and Dubey bowled an over – I think all the bowlers worked at that level and took responsibility. They got them to 208. It was an incredible bowling effort, stopping the unit.”
