The ownership of Delhi Capitals (DC) is once again in the headlines amid the team’s poor performance in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026). The franchise is currently co-owned by GMR Group and JSW Sports, and they are reportedly not on the same page at present.

Despite a three-wicket win over Punjab Kings, seventh-placed Delhi Capitals have no real chances of making the IPL 2026 playoffs. They have two more league games left, but even if they win both, they will be 14 in the table, and that won’t be enough for playoff chances.

Delhi Capitals face fresh ownership tensions amid poor IPL 2026 campaign

Since 2021, Delhi have struggled to make an impact in the IPL and have failed to make the playoffs. DC finished fifth in 2022, slipped miserably to ninth in 2023, dropped to sixth in 2024 and could only reach fifth in the 2025 edition. Now, they are almost out of the race for the playoffs.

Amidst the ongoing struggles in the Indian Premier League for the past several years, a change in the existing system was proposed by the GMR Group. Currently, GMR Group and JSW Sports run the Delhi Capitals franchise for two years each by rotation.

But recently, GMR Group reportedly suggested increasing the management period to three years, like the IPL mega auction cycle, which also works in a three-year pattern. This will help them continue with their plans and may help them perform consistently in the league.

GMR Group and JSW Sports reportedly at loggerheads over Delhi Capitals management plans

However, Cricblogger has now claimed that JSW Sports is unwilling to agree to GMR Group’s proposal at this stage, which could lead to a rift between the co-owners of the DC side.

Since it is now JSW Sports’ turn to take over the DC franchise for the next phase, they want to take complete control of the operations before taking any long-term decisions on the new proposal. This disagreement has now created uncertainty around the franchise and its plans.

If one group works with a different approach and the other takes over in the middle, it could affect the stability of the franchise. The GMR Group and many believe that this back-and-forth system is one of the main reasons why Delhi Capitals has struggled to remain consistent over the years.

Unlike some other IPL teams, where the owners work together with a clear plan, the Capitals have a different management style and different ideas about team building and long-term planning. And this is one of the major reasons why despite being one of the original IPL franchises, they have not won the title yet.

DC owners maintain silence as uncertainty grows

Now, internal issues could hurt the franchise even before the next season. As of now, neither GMR nor JSW Sports have made any official statement on the matter.

But discussions regarding the future management of the franchise are already in the headlines, and it will be interesting to see if both sides can find a common solution before the mega auction in 2027.

DC will next face Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026 on May 17 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
