Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani has revealed that, as head coach of Southern Brave in The Hundred, he intended to pick Pakistani players in the auction but did not sign anyone till the end.
Recently, the controversy related to players of India and Pakistan increased once again during The Hundred. Indian owners take over several franchises in the ECB-controlled league, and hence, media speculation suggested that they may have issued a directive to ban coaches from bidding on players of Pakistani origin.
Southern Brave is one of the franchises that has sold its stake to Indian owners. The owners of Delhi Capitals have bought the stake, and hence, Delhi Capitals has appointed Hemang Badani as the head coach of the franchise in The Hundred as well.
Delhi Capitals coach aimed to bid on Pakistani players
Ever since Sunrisers Leeds, owned by Kavya Maran, bid for Pakistani spinner Abrar Ahmed and got him in ‘The Hundred Auction’, the debate over the inclusion of Pakistani players has intensified.
Hemang Badani said that his franchise, Southern Braves, also intended to bid for some Pakistani players and had some names on their list, but did not buy them as they did not find them essential in their objective of building the best possible team.
Asked about the possibility of signing Pakistani players, Badani said, “We had a few players on our list.”
Talking about the team, he said that they already had players like South African batsman Tristan Stubbs and Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, while they needed a main spinner and they got Adil Rashid for the job. The Capitals also bought Australian all-rounder Nikhil Chaudhary, who is an Indian-origin cricketer.
Hemang Badani reveals the real mantra behind successful auctions
The Delhi Capitals coach stressed that discipline and patience are important during the auction, especially because plans can never be 100% on track in such a fast-moving process.
“The key thing about auctions is that you have to be disciplined and stick to your plan,” he said. “Even when you feel like the auction is not going in the direction you wanted, you still have to be patient and adapt quickly. “As soon as you start panicking, things can go wrong.”
He also said that no team can go out of the auction with every target that they had thought of before the auction started. However, if a team manages to bring around 70-75% of its players, it should be happy.
Badani reveals his groundwork behind players’ investment in The Hundred
Southern Brave not only bought former players but also the most familiar cricketer, Chris Jordan. He has been a longtime favorite in the Utility Bowl. The head coach said he has been a special player for the Braves and he understands the situations well.
He also invested in the future of English Under-19 cricketer Thomas Reeve, whose performance in the Under-19 World Cup had impressed the Delhi Capitals coach.
