Stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav led the team in the recent IPL 2026 encounter at the Wankhede Stadium, as regular skipper Hardik Pandya missed the match due to back spasms.

After Nicholas Pooran scored 63 runs in 21 balls and Mitchell Marsh added 44 runs, Lucknow Super Giants scored a total of 228/5. Mumbai chased down the target of 229 runs with eight balls to spare with the help of half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, which is a record for the most successful chase at the venue.

He showed a lot of character – Suryakumar Yadav

During the post-match presentation, Suryakumar Yadav praised his bowling unit for gaining control in the middle overs. The stand-in captain said that despite LSG dominating the powerplay, MI’s bowlers showed strong character and executed clear plans to limit the scoring rate.

“To be honest, we have been in this situation many times this season. To be honest, it was nothing new. But then I realized that in T20 cricket after the powerplay from 7 to 10, that is the best time when you can pull the game out. We knew there would be two wickets here and there, and I could take control of the game. And the way all the bowlers responded, I think they showed a lot of character.”

“I don’t really remember. But then from there pulling up to 162 for 5 in 16 overs, I think the performance was incredible. Everyone had that belief, they had their own clear plans. I didn’t tell them anything. It was just a little bit, a little bit of support involved in certain situations. But then at the end of the day, the way they displayed their character and the way they bowled, I think it’s commendable.”

Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton lead Mumbai Indians to one of their biggest wins

Rohit Sharma made a strong comeback after injury and scored 84 runs in 44 balls, while Ryan Rickelton added 83 runs in 32 balls. The opening pair chased the target and added 143 runs for the first wicket, before Naman Dheer and the middle order completed the job to seal a six-wicket win.

After the win, Mumbai Indians are still at ninth position in the points table. The five-time champion team has lost seven of its first ten matches. They have six points with a net run rate (NRR) of -0.649, making their playoff hopes low.

After this defeat against Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants have now faced their sixth consecutive defeat. They remain at the bottom of the table with only four points. Aiden Markram scored 31 not out and Himmat Singh added 40 not out.
