Former Indian wicketkeeper batsman Deep Dasgupta has shared his views on Abhishek Sharma’s poor form. The southpaw has been struggling to score runs in recent times. In the last three matches, he failed to score many runs against Zimbabwe, despite India defeating the home side 3–0 in the T20I series, as he was the only player not to score.
Deep Dasgupta has dismissed all the concerns growing over Abhishek Sharma’s current form as he believes it is nothing to worry about as he had failed in just three matches. The No. 2 T20I batsman has been absolutely dreadful, scoring 11 runs in three innings at an average of 3.66. In the last 6 innings he has scored 40 runs with four single-digit scores.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Deep Dasgupta said that Abhishek Sharma’s poor form has been exaggerated, but there is some concern; It hasn’t reached a level where the southpaw should be worried about being dropped. He has been an excellent batsman in the T20I format for the Men in Blue.
“It is being exaggerated a bit but there is no denying that it is a matter of concern. It has not reached a worrying stage yet. But he has to work on one thing. His bat flow is very good when he is playing shots down the ground. But this up and down bat flow becomes a problem behind length balls. Converting the vertical bat swing to horizontal shots becomes a challenge.”

Abhishek Sharma also failed in the T20 World Cup 2026 as he scored just one half-century in the entire tournament with an average below 18 and was out for a duck three times, but he got the support of the team management and performed well in the final. He failed to open the account in 23 innings this year.
“If he’s getting stuck, it’s outside that particular length that he’s struggling with. So he’s got to work on his bat swing and his hands. But it’s a tricky situation because it can make you think twice about losing a great down swing while trying to improve elsewhere.”
When will Abhishek Sharma play for India next?
Deep Dasgupta also pointed to Abhishek’s problems with similar short balls, as he believes getting out on those balls is more worrying. The 25-year-old was the top-ranked T20I batsman in the world last year, having scored over 193 in 21 games with a strike rate of 42.95.
Dasgupta said, “Not getting runs is not a problem. He is such a good player that if not now, runs will come. But the way he is getting out, it is a bigger problem than not being able to score runs in some matches.”
Abhishek will be in action in the upcoming series against West Indies as India will first play a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in August and later in September they will take on the West Indies in a white-ball series.
