The ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) has suffered another blow in the form of former Australia opener David Warner, who flew back home from Pakistan midway through the season to spend some time with family. He was expected to return before tonight’s PSL match. But according to current reports, the experienced opener has not reached Pakistan yet.
David Warner has been appointed as the captain of Karachi Kings for the ongoing PSL 2026 season. Under the leadership of Warner, the team also occupied the top position in the points table for some time. Till now they are undefeated after playing three matches and winning all three matches.
David Warner returns to Australia after scoring a half-century in PSL 2026
David Warner returned to Australia to spend Easter after the match against the Pindies, where the Australian star scored a half-century. It was earlier reported that after spending some time with family, the batsman will join the Kings ahead of their next clash, which is against Peshawar Zalmi today.
It was also reported and confirmed by Cricket Australia that the batsman will face court next month after being charged by police. Warner was arrested in Australia in a drink and drive case.
Cricket Australia confirms police action against cricketer
In a press release, Cricket Australia said Warner was charged by police after allegedly blowing more than twice the legal limit in a random breath test.
“David is aware of the seriousness of these allegations. We will support him throughout the upcoming process,” Cricket NSW CEO Lee Jarman said in a statement.
According to an AAP report, police said Warner was driving a van that stopped and parked near a roadside breath testing unit in Maroubra, in Sydney’s east. After that, as he failed the test, he was arrested and taken to Maroubra Police Station for further testing. The 39-year-old man was charged with allegedly producing a blood alcohol reading of 0.104 – more than twice the legal limit.
Karachi Kings appointed new captain in place of Warner before Peshawar Zalmi match
Since David Warner is not available for tonight’s match, Hasan Ali is expected to lead Karachi Kings against Peshawar Zalmi. Additionally, there are concerns about whether the Australian batsman will return to Pakistan for the remainder of the Pakistan Super League 2026. Before the season, several foreign talents ruled themselves out of the tournament due to various reasons.
If David Warner remains unavailable for the PSL franchise to participate in the current season, it would be a huge blow to the team, as Warner is not only their captain but also the pillar of their batting unit. It will be difficult to see what the cricketers and franchises will do in the future. Since the hearing of the drink and drive case is still pending, Warner’s availability for the franchise league remains uncertain. Hasan Ali will take charge of the team in his place.
