David Warner could be sacked as Sydney Thunder captain after drink-driving charge

David Warner has been one of the best opening batsmen in world cricket. The former Australian opening batsman has retired from international cricket; However, he continues to play franchise leagues in different parts of the world. Currently, Warner is playing for Karachi Kings in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026, and was also captaining the team.

In between the PSL, David Warner flew back to Australia to spend some time with family. However, this proved problematic for the southpaw, as he was caught with a drink and drive charge. The southpaw was charged by police after allegedly blowing more than twice the legal limit in a random breath test.

Sydney Thunder will evaluate David Warner’s situation

Now, as DailyMail reports, Warner is expected to appear at the Downing Center Local Court on May 7. This development has put Cricket New South Wales (NSW) in a difficult situation.

Particularly given Warner’s leadership role with the Sydney Thunder and the franchise’s long history of supporting road safety programs. Cricket NSW chief executive Lee German respected the enormity of the situation, but declined to speak further due to pending legal processes.

I can’t say much – Lee Germain

“I can’t say much (about Warner’s alleged drink-driving incident) because of the legal side of it. Obviously, the allegations are worrying and we take them very seriously,” The West Australian quoted German as saying.

He said, “At Cricket NSW, we are strong advocates of safe driving and not drink-driving. We teach our players a lot in that area and we will support David through this process, knowing there is a court case coming, but we will try to educate our players even more on this important matter.”

NSW and Thunder actively participate in road safety

Sydney Thunder and NSW are very active in road safety campaigns and have been doing so for years. This also includes their annual clash against the Brisbane Heat, branded as the Road Safety Cup, a key campaign in partnership with government stakeholders.

David Warner was appointed captain in 2018 after his ban for ball tampering was lifted. However, as per the recent situations, the captaincy will be thoroughly reviewed and the governing body will take a decision on the matter.

“Keep in mind, these are allegations at this stage and the Sydney Thunder captaincy will be dealt with in due course,” the German said. Warner’s leadership position remains under scrutiny, with Cricket NSW expected to conduct a serious review in the coming weeks.

David Warner returns against Islamabad United

David Warner returns to Pakistan for Karachi Kings after a short holiday. However, by April 11, 2026, he missed one match due to back pain, and South African batting star Reeza Hendricks replaced him in the last game against Hyderabad Kingsmen.

The Australian cricketer may be back in the next game against Islamabad United tomorrow. He scored a half-century in the last match he played for the Kings and the Kings are at the fourth position in the table after winning three games and losing two.
