Darren Sammy reveals why Alzarri Joseph is not in the Test team
West Indies head coach darren sammy Joseph’s absence has now been highlighted, confirming that the fast bowler has opted out of the series despite being initially selected.
While talking to the media, Sammy admitted that losing a bowler like Joseph was a big blow for the team, but clarified that the decision did not come from the coaching staff.
“Yes, it is a big loss. Mr Joseph has refused selection. That is the reality of the situation. He was selected. He is now coming back from injury, and for the reasons that followed, he has refused selection.” Sammy said.
The former West Indies captain also said that the matter is beyond his jurisdiction and will be handled by the board and team management.
“This is a decision that is above my head. I leave it to the directors to find any solutions where contracted players have to refuse selection.” He added.
Interestingly, when Cricket West Indies unveiled the squad earlier this week, the official statement only mentioned that Joseph was unavailable due to “personal reasons”. Sammy’s comments have now clarified the situation further, revealing that the 29-year-old had decided not to take part despite being available for selection.
Joseph’s absence comes on the heels of his return from a lower back injury. The right-arm fast bowler missed the tour of India and New Zealand before making a comeback in the Test series against Sri Lanka, where he took six wickets in the two matches. He also took part in the five-match ODI series against New Zealand before withdrawing ahead of the Pakistan tour.

Sammy remains optimistic despite losing his fast bowler
Despite being without one of their key fast bowlers, Sammy believes West Indies have enough quality to compete strongly against Pakistan. The head coach expressed confidence in the current bowling unit and insisted that the team still has the ability to take 20 wickets, which he believes is the foundation to win Test matches.
Sammy cited the team’s recent bowling performances against Australia and New Zealand as proof that the attack can trouble quality opposition. He also highlighted the encouraging improvement shown by the batting unit during the recent Test series against Sri Lanka, where the batsmen showed more consistency. According to Sammy, a combination of disciplined bowling with better batting performance will be the key to achieving a positive result against Pakistan.
“What can I tell you [is that] We have seen that we have a bowling line-up which can take 20 wickets. This is the first start of winning the test match. We saw it in New Zealand. We saw it in the Australia series. We equalized Australia with the ball. We equaled New Zealand with the ball also. And the confidence and hard work put in by the batsmen can be seen in the Test series against Sri Lanka. You know, there’s a lot more stability coming. So once we match these two run-scorers, we know we have the bowling line-up to take 20 wickets and help us win the Test match.” Sammy said further.
