Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opening batsman Ayush Mhatre was ruled out of the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a left hamstring injury. However, recent medical reports have confirmed that the young top-order batsman has suffered a wrist injury along with a foot problem.
Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Chennai Super Kings will next face Delhi Capitals (DC) on Tuesday, May 5, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The five-time champions are currently sixth in the 10-team points table with four wins from nine matches, and need at least four more wins to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Ayush Mhatre may be out of action for two months
According to a report in Times of India, Ayush Mhatre has suffered two injuries. The report adds that an additional wrist issue will keep the teenager out of action for at least a few months.
“Ayush has not only been diagnosed with a left hamstring injury but has also been diagnosed with a wrist injury. He may be out of action for a few months now,” a source told TOI.
The injury has ruled him out of the upcoming T20 Mumbai League in June, where Triumph Knights had retained him along with Suryakumar Yadav. Before the injury, Mhatre had scored 201 runs in six innings at an average of 33.50 and a strike rate of 177.87.
Unfortunately it looks pretty bad – Mike Hussey
Ayush Mhatre suffered a left hamstring injury during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 18. He continued to bat despite struggling to run between the wickets during that target chase before being dismissed for 30.
Chennai Super Kings batting coach Mike Hussey has expressed disappointment over the injury. He said that losing an in-form batsman in such good touch creates a big gap in the team.
CSK batting coach Mike Hussey had said about Mhatre’s hamstring injury, “Unfortunately, it looks very bad. He is going to be a big, big loss because he has been in really good touch for us.”
Chennai Super Kings recently ended their three-match losing streak with an eight-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI). Their next opponent, Delhi Capitals, defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) by seven wickets.
Chennai Super Kings official statement on Ayush Mhatre’s injury
Earlier, the Chennai Super Kings management had released an official statement on the injured Ayush Mhatre. The franchise confirmed that he will require a long rehabilitation period and wished him a full and speedy recovery.
“Ayush’s injury will require a rehabilitation period of 6-12 weeks,” the five-time IPL champions had said in an official statement.
Chennai Super Kings has signed fast bowler Akash Madhwal as a replacement for Ayush Mhatre. After a top-order shock, the team has tested Urvil Patel and Sarfaraz Khan at the third position in recent matches.
Many players of Chennai Super Kings are also out due to injuries this season. Spencer Johnson was replaced by Nathan Ellis, while Khalil Ahmed and Ramakrishna Ghosh suffered setbacks. Former captain MS Dhoni has not been able to play any match yet due to knee and calf problem.
