Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have started planning for the IPL 2027 season after another disappointing year. The five-time IPL champions are now looking to make some big changes to their squad, and the first step is a special fitness camp for all the available players.

Chennai Super Kings have been struggling badly since winning the IPL trophy in 2023 under the leadership of MS Dhoni. After that record title win, the team has failed to perform consistently. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya trade: Shivam Dubey, Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis feature in reported CSK-MI scenarios.

Why did Chennai Super Kings decide to make big changes?

For the first time in the franchise’s history, CSK failed to make the IPL playoffs for three consecutive seasons. The 2026 season was another forgettable season for the Chennai-based franchise. They won only six of their 14 league matches and finished eighth in the points table.

After another poor campaign, the management decided to make major changes ahead of the next season. The biggest and most shocking decision came after IPL 2026, when Chennai Super Kings parted ways with their long-time head coach Stephen Fleming.

Fleming was one of the most successful coaches in IPL history and played a major role in helping Chennai Super Kings win five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies.

CSK plans to start IPL 2027 with special fitness camp

And now the Chennai Super Kings team management has decided to take another big step to speed up the preparations for the next season. As reported by RevSportz journalist Rohit Juglan, Chennai Super Kings have planned a two to three-day fitness camp for all the available players.

Every CSK player has been asked to attend the fitness camp as per his schedule before the franchise takes its final decision on player retention, release and possible trades. Hopefully the camp will help the team management decide who will be a part of CSK’s future plans.

He posted, x: “All CSK players have been called for a 2-3 day fitness camp just before the final decision on retention, releases and trades is taken.”

Chennai Super Kings set to review big-money contracts ahead of IPL 2027

Meanwhile, some players of Chennai Super Kings may face close review. Young players like Karthik Sharma and Prashant Veer, who were bought for ₹14.20 crore in the last IPL auction, have not lived up to expectations. Their performance will reportedly be evaluated before the final decision is taken. Meanwhile, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been given the lead as the East Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy has been announced.

Some reports also claim that Rahul Chahar, Matt Henry and Matthew Short are among the players who could be released as the franchise looks to build a stronger and more balanced squad for the upcoming IPL 2027 season.

However, the biggest question is still about MS Dhoni. Dhoni did not play a single match in IPL 2026 because he was recovering from injury. His future is still unclear, and the franchise is waiting to know whether he will return as a player for IPL 2027 or take up a coaching or advisory role.
