Veteran cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur created history by becoming the first Team India women captain to lift the ICC Women’s World Cup trophy. The middle-order batsman shared a picture in which she is seen relaxing on the bed with the World Cup trophy next to her, wearing a classic old-fashioned T-shirt.
India defeated South Africa by 52 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, November 2. After being sent in to bat, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team scored a total of 298 runs. Their bowlers produced a disciplined performance and bowled out South Africa despite valiant resistance from Laura Wolvaardt.
That’s why cricket is everyone’s game – Harmanpreet Kaur
On Monday (November 3), Harmanpreet Kaur celebrated India’s World Cup win through an Instagram post. The Indian captain shared a picture of himself sleeping near the trophy. He was seen wearing a T-shirt which read, “Cricket is a gentleman’s ~gentleman’s game.”
Harmanpreet said that cricket is everyone’s game. The post gained attention on social media, as the win was special for fans across the country.
The 36-year-old captioned the social post: “Some dreams are shared by a billion people. That’s why cricket is everyone’s game.”
Posing with trophies in bed has become a trend across all sports. Rohit Sharma and Lionel Messi have shared similar victory snapshots in the past. Jemimah Rodrigues and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana also joined in and posted pictures of themselves on the bed with the trophy after India’s World Cup win.
Harmanpreet Kaur was out in the final after scoring 20 runs with the bat.
India’s victory in the World Cup could be a defining moment for women’s cricket in the country, with many drawing comparisons to the men’s 1983 victory. Watching from the stands, Rohit Sharma hoped that Harmanpreet Kaur would not have to suffer the same fate that she once faced in the World Cup final.
Kaur could not make any major impact with the bat as the Indian captain scored 20 runs in 29 balls including two fours. Shafali Verma scored 87 runs in 78 balls, while Deepti Sharma added 58 runs in one ball.
Richa Ghosh, who scored 34 runs in 24 balls, helped the team take the total close to 300. The opening partnership of 104 runs between Shafali and Smriti Mandhana set the tone for the home team.
India becomes the fourth team to win the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup
India had a disappointing start, as the team suffered three consecutive defeats in the group stage. However, they bounced back with a win over New Zealand to book a place in the semi-finals. They then surprised defending champions Australia with a record chase and secured their place in the final.
Before their recent win, India had reached the Women’s World Cup final twice. They also missed several global tournaments between 2020 and 2024 by narrow margins. However, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team rewrote history, ending the long wait for the title.
With their win, India became the fourth team to win the Women’s World Cup and joined the elite group of champions along with Australia, England and New Zealand.
