Cricket Canada has suffered a major setback after the International Cricket Council (ICC) took a tough decision against the board. At a time when Canada was trying to increase its presence in the international game, the ICC decided to suspend the board due to several off-field controversies.
Cricket Canada was under question due to governance failures, administrative problems, financial concerns, compliance issues and integrity issues. One of the biggest concerns involved investigation into matters related to alleged corruption.
The ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has launched an investigation into Canada’s match against New Zealand during the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup. Separate investigations also indicated that betting was involved in the selection of the Canadian team while board officials were involved in theft and fraud in Calgary.
ICC suspends Cricket Canada due to serious governance failures
Earlier in May 2026, the ICC had already given a big warning by freezing Cricket Canada’s funding for six months. But after the ICC Board meeting in Ahmedabad, they have officially suspended Cricket Canada’s ICC membership with immediate effect.
However, the global body ensured that Canadian players did not suffer losses due to administrative failures. In fact, the ICC allowed both the Canadian men’s and women’s national teams to participate in ICC tournaments and international competitions during the suspension period.

The ICC said in an official media release: “The ICC Board has decided to suspend Cricket Canada from ICC membership with immediate effect due to serious breaches of its membership obligations. In making this decision, the ICC Board was mindful of the importance of protecting the interests of Canadian players and ensuring they are not harmed by governance issues affecting the national governing body.”
The governing body further stated, “Accordingly, Canadian national representative teams will remain eligible to participate in ICC events during the period of suspension. To support the continued participation and development of national teams, Cricket Canada will be permitted to access ICC funding only for approved national team events, through a controlled funding mechanism under the supervision of ICC management.”
Cricket Canada will have to fulfill strict conditions to regain ICC membership.
However, Cricket Canada has been given the opportunity to earn back its ICC membership. The ICC will provide a list of conditions that must be met by the Board to achieve full membership.
The statement further said, “The ICC will also provide Cricket Canada with a set of reinstatement conditions, which are intended to address governance and administrative issues identified by the Board. Progress against these conditions will be monitored by the ICC Normalization Committee, supported by ICC management, with reinstatement of membership subject to the Board being satisfied that the conditions have been fully met.”
16-team Global Qualifier proposed to make T20 World Cup race more exciting
Additionally, the ICC has taken a big step towards making the Men’s T20 World Cup qualification process more competitive and exciting. They have approved the idea of creating a new 16-team Global Qualifier, where teams from around the world will compete for places in the T20 World Cup.

ICC management will now work on the tournament structure and qualification system before presenting the full plan at the next round of ICC meetings. If approved, the new qualifier could give more emerging cricket nations a bigger opportunity to play in the T20 World Cup.
