Usman Khawaja is expected to be ready for the second Ashes Test at the Gabba, but his candid comments about the Perth surface have caused a stir. After calling the Perth Stadium pitch on day one a “piece of rubbish”, the opening batsman is likely to face an inquiry from Cricket Australia, which is seeking clarification on his comments.
Usman Khawaja did not open in any innings of the First Test, as he had not spent enough time on the field to be eligible to bat. Australia started their innings with Marnus Labuschagne and debutant Jake Weatherald. Khawaja eventually came in at number four but scored only two runs.
Both teams took 19 wickets on the first day, which was similar to the bowlers’ favorable start against India last year. However, ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle still rated the pitch as “very good”.
Same thing happened in India Test last year too – Usman Khawaja
Speaking at an event for his foundation, Usman Khawaja criticized Perth’s surface. He said that the pitch had behaved similarly on the opening day of the India Test last year. Khawaja said that Steven Smith also had to struggle and got injured repeatedly.
Khawaja said, “Nineteen wickets and about 20 people hit on the first day, it’s a fantastic wicket – it feels really fair.”
“The same thing happened in the Indian Test last year, it’s just the first wicket of the day, the ball is not reacting. Steve Smith is the best cricketer I have ever played with and he is missing the middle of his bat a lot – he doesn’t miss the middle of his bat. He is getting the ball in the elbow, he is getting the ball.”
Perth’s wicket on the first day is a piece of rubbish – Usman Khawaja
Usman Khawaja said that it became very difficult to bat due to the unexpected bounce on the first day. He described the first day’s pitch as “pretty rubbish”. Khawaja said that the wicket usually gets better on the second and third day and gets worse again later in the match.
“You can’t really predict up and down. Up and down is the hardest – sideways is a bit easier but up and down your hands can’t hold. So first wicket of the day [Perth] It’s a piece of nonsense, I’m happy to say,” Khawaja added.
“It was last year, it was this year. They get better. On the second day, the third day and then the fourth day, they start breaking down,” he said.
Cricket Australia will seek clarification on Usman Khawaja’s pitch criticism
Cricket Australia plans to speak to Usman Khawaja about his comments calling the Perth pitch a “piece of rubbish”. According to officials Sydney Morning HeraldHe wasn’t happy with what was said, even though he hasn’t addressed it publicly.
They do not want to distract him before the second Test at Gabba, but still hope that he will seek clarification from him once he joins the team. Only then will they decide whether any action is needed.
Australia has kept the same team for the next test. The players will meet in Brisbane on Sunday, where an alternative training session will be held at the Gabba. Taking a 1-0 lead in the series, Australia will play the second Test match against England under the captaincy of Ben Stokes from December 4.
