Sunrisers Hyderabad’s past performance and IPL titles

Sunrisers Hyderabad, who made their debut in 2013 by ousting Deccan Chargers, have been one of the most consistent teams in the history of the league, making the playoffs for eight consecutive years.

Although it had a few bad seasons after this, it made a strong comeback by playing aggressive cricket and reaching the final in 2024.

2008-2013

Deccan Chargers, as the Hyderabad franchise was known at the time, had a nightmare start in the league as it finished bottom of the points table in the inaugural season.

However, the next year, under the leadership of Adam Gilchrist, the team made a strong comeback and won the title by defeating RCB in a low-scoring match in the final.

Deccan Chargers made good use of players like Rohit Sharma, who performed well with both bat and ball in that particular season, including a hat-trick.

The defending champions were able to carry over the good performance from the previous season into the next year and finished second on the points table, making it to the knockouts in back-to-back seasons.

2014-2019

The 2011 and 2012 seasons were forgettable for Deccan Chargers as they had to release many players in the 2011 IPL auction, which had a huge impact on the team’s performance.

In 2013, Deccan Chargers were replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad, and included most of the players who were part of Deccan Chargers in the previous season.

Unlike Deccan Chargers, SRH made a great start to their IPL journey and made it to the playoffs by finishing fourth on the points table in their debut season.

It was a dream start for Sunrisers Hyderabad as the team qualified for the playoffs in eight consecutive IPL seasons, including 2016, where the then David Warner-led side defeated RCB to win their first IPL title.

2020-2025

However, a lot has changed since that win, including the captain. SRH have tried three different captains after replacing David Warner midway through the 2021 season.

The team management decided to hand over the captaincy to Kane Williamson after parting ways with Warner in 2022, as the then New Zealand captain had already led the team in Warner’s absence in 2018 and led the team to the final.

After Williamson was not able to repeat the same success with the team in 2018, the captaincy for the 2023 season was handed over to Aiden Markram, who had led Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the title in the inaugural edition of the SA20 the same year.

The search for the captain finally ended when 2023 ODI World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins was selected by SRH in the 2024 IPL auction, and it proved to be the right decision as Cummins led SRH to their third IPL final.

Sunrisers Hyderabad will be hoping to repeat the same performance that the team gave in 2024 after a disappointing campaign in the last IPL edition.

Players retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad

Although Sunrisers Hyderabad has retained most of its first-choice players like captain Pat Cummins, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, the team will be hoping for a better performance from them, which was not the case in the last edition.
