Chennai Super Kings past performance and IPL titles

Chennai Super Kings is the only team to have qualified for the knockouts and playoffs consecutively in the first ten seasons, including three titles, which ended in 2020.

Although the team won two IPL championships thereafter, the team was not as comfortable as in the previous decade, failing to make the top four in four of the last six seasons.

2008-2013

CSK had a good start to their campaign in the IPL as the then MS Dhoni-led team played the final of the inaugural edition against Rajasthan Royals.

The men in yellow continued the good work in 2009 by making the knockouts and then the final in 2010 against a team that would often clash with Mumbai Indians in the title clash.

Chennai Super Kings were favorites to win the IPL title from the very first season and their wait ended when they won it in 2010 and became the first team to defend it in 2011.

One reason they started the tournament as favorites in the early years was their strong Indian core, which included MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravichandran Ashwin, and was later joined by Ravindra Jadeja.

2014-2019

Despite consistent performances after defending their title, CSK had to wait until 2018 to win the IPL for the third time.

It was an ending a team dreams of, as no one gave CSK a chance to qualify for the playoffs, leave alone win the trophy, as they had several players who were considered too old for T20 cricket.

But Dad’s Army overcame all the odds and won their third title, making them the second most successful IPL team after Mumbai Indians.

CSK almost became the only team to defend their title twice in the IPL when they faced MI in the final in 2019, but fell miserably by one run.

2020-2025

2020 was the first instance when Chennai Super Kings finished at the bottom of the table as they were below par in all three departments of the game that season, but they bounced back strongly and won their fourth IPL title in 2021.

A similar story was repeated over the next two years, with the defending champions losing in the first round and becoming the most successful IPL team the following year.

Having said that, the last two editions did not live up to CSK’s expectations, missing out on a playoff spot by a narrow margin in 2024 and struggling to find the right combination in 2025.

Players retained by Chennai Super Kings

CSK have retained their young Indian core in the form of Ayush Mhatre, Urvil Patel and Anshul Khamboj along with RR veteran Sanju Samson.
