IPL 2026 auction: Complete list of players bought by Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings’ past performance and IPL titles
One of the oldest teams, having been a part of the IPL since the very first season, Punjab Kings had one of their best seasons last season as they reached the final of the tournament for the second time in eighteen years.
2008-2013
Punjab Kings, then known as Kings XI Punjab, had a good start in the IPL as they finished second on the points table in the inaugural edition, but failed to make the knockouts and playoffs until 2013.
Having said that, the team was the center of some good individual performances during the said time period, one of them being Shaun Marsh’s fascinating season in 2008 and the match-winning century hit by Paul Valthaty against CSK in 2011.
Current South African middle-order batsman David Miller also scored a century while playing for Punjab Kings against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2013 edition of the IPL.
However, despite such performances, Punjab Kings failed to click as a unit, resulting in them failing to make the top four.
2014-2019
A new ray of hope for things to change emerged when PBKS, under the leadership of George Bailey, made it to the final against KKR in 2014 and almost pulled the game in their favour, but lost in the final over.
Despite entering as runners-up the following season, the same old story was repeated as the team once again failed to produce consistent match-winning performances for the next ten years.
One reason for the poor performance in the last few years was the frequent changes made by Punjab Kings from captains to players, which led to instability, which also affected the results.
Since 2016, Punjab Kings have named Ravichandran Ashwin and KL Rahul among eight different players with a maximum tenure of two years.
2020-2025
Like 2014, things were much better in 2025 when Ricky Ponting was appointed as the head coach of the team and Shreyas Iyer joined as captain, the two had previously worked together at Delhi Capitals and took the team to the final in 2020.
The pair were also able to continue their good work for Punjab Kings by taking the team to their second IPL final and will hope to take a step forward in the upcoming edition.
Players retained by Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings retained their core ahead of the auction, which included captain Shreyas Iyer, India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is Arshdeep Singh and experienced leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.
